4/4/84: Padres shut out the Pirates in "3-G", 3-0
The San Diego Padres introduced a new way to win a ball game on Thursday afternoon, it's called "3-G." Gwynn, Garvey and Gossage.
Gwynn strikes first
After 2/1-2 scoreless innings, the Padres struck first on a double by Garry Templeton. After starting pitcher Andy Hawkins bounced to 2nd and Alan Wiggins flied to center, it was All-World right fielder Tony Gwynn smacking a triple to center field, scoring Templeton. After Graig Nettles walked, it would be the 2nd component in the "3-G" getting the job done as Steve Garvey scored Gwynn with a single, Nettles to 3rd and scoring on a subsequent single by Terry Kennedy for a 3-0 Pads lead over the Pirates after 3. Garvey would also dazzle with his glove, killing 2 Pirate rallies with double plays. It would be a matter of time before that 3rd "G" component would make his presence felt.
"GOOSE! GOOSE!"
The calls started in the 6th with the Pirates putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out and Andy Hawkins on the mound. Hawkins would strike out Pirate starter Jose DeLeon to end the inning. Hawkins then started the 7th and got Marvell Wynne out on a liner to 2nd, then after singles by Johnnie Ray and Bill Madlock, the call was made. Goose Gossage's first batter was Jason Thompson, who grounded into a DP earlier in the game which was turned by Garvey. Thompson would hit into the 3-6-3 again, getting Gossage out of the inning.
Big test in the 8th
Amos Otis opened the 8th with a walk off Gossage, then Tony Pena singled for his 3rd hit of the game, Otis to 2nd. Doug Frobel struck out, then Dale Berra grounded to Garvey, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. PH Lee Mazzilli walked to load the bases, giving Marvell Wynne a chance with the bases loaded.
