4/8/84: Wohlford comes through in a pinch as Expos beat Braves in 10, 4-2

Jim Wohlford 's 2-run pinch double in the 10th off Terry Forster gave the Expos a 4-2 extra inning win over the Braves in Atlanta . Gary Carter led off the inning with a lead-off single, then advanced to 3rd on Tim Wallach 's double. PH Bobby Ramos then lined to short, followed by an infield-in slow roller by Derrell Thomas . Wohlford's pinch double brought in the runs, then Expo relief ace Jeff Reardon , save for a 2-out walk by Claudell Washington collected the save for Joe Hesketh .  The Expos forced extra innings with 1 out in the 9th when Pete Rose singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Tony Scott *. Bryan Little with his 2nd double of the game and 4th hit overall sent Scott home with a 1-17 chance to beat the throw home. The d-20 roll was a "16." Terry Forster then took over for starter Len Barker and got the final 2 outs of the inning. The Braves took the lead in the 7th off Charlie Lea on a lead-off double by Bob Horner , who scored on a single...

4/8/84: Phils v. Reds, or "How Soon Can Pete Rose Become Manager?"

Pitching Matchup: Carlton v. Soto Expectations for pitching matchup: Pitcher's duel, as my last few games in replay have been blowouts. What Really Happened: Phillies jumped out to 7-0 lead after 1-1/2 innings, Soto yanked in 4th, Reds actually pulled within 3 runs at 7-4 after 2 but Phils got 2 runs in 4th and 3 in 5th for another blowout. 4/8/84: Cowens "Brews" up a huge day against Milwaukee, 7-4

Something was "Brewing" in Seattle, and it wasn't a Brewer, it was Al Cowens "Brewing" up a pair of home runs accounting for all of the Mariners runs including a mammoth grand slam off Rollie Fingers in the 8th. Cowens earlier hit a 3-run homer off Don Sutton in the 2nd, but after Sutton departed in the 8th and Fingers took over, Cowens go-ahead slam and Mike Stanton getting Cecil Cooper to pop out to 1st in the 9th with 2 on rallied Seattle to the 7-4 win.  After Seattle took a 3-0 lead on Cowens 1st homer, Milwaukee rallied with single runs in the 5th through 8th innings to take the lead. RBI singles by Dion James in the 5th and Roy Howell in the 6th cut the lead to 3-2. After James reached on a 2-base error by Gorman Thomas in the 7th, Robin Yount tripled home James for the tying run. In the Brewer 8th, Ben Oglivie took Dave Beard deep to right to take the lead. Then, it was Cowens time again. After Jack Perconte led off the 8th with a bouncer t...

4/8/84: What Can Brown Do for You? 1.2 IP, 48.60 ERA, that's what. A's 15, Red Sox 3

In real life, Red Sox pitcher Mike Brown pitched just 1/3 of an inning in an embarrassing loss to the A's on 4/8. This time, he made it to the 2nd but still got his A'ss whooped. 9 ER in 1.2 en route to an 15-3 blowout of the Sawx and a series sweep.  How did Brown actually get out of the 1st? Rickey Henderson walked/stole, Dwayne Murphy singled/RBI/stole, Joe Morgan single/RBI, Carney Lansford single, Bruce Bocthe single/RBI, Dave Kingman single/RBI, Davey Lopes ... 5/4/3 DP. Mike Heath struck out to end the inning. The Sawx got on the board with a " natural cycle " in the 2nd, starting with a lead-off homer by Jim Rice , followed by a triple by Rich Gedman . Dave Stapleton then doubled in Gedman and Glenn Hoffman completed the cycle with a single moving Stapleton to 3rd. That brought the Sox to within 4-2 but thanks to the "clutch" symbol, the A's completed the Brown-out. The A's sent 10 in the 2nd, scored 5, with 4 of those runs coming...

4/8/84: Tommy John, Angel bats perform surgery on the Blue Jays, 14-3

Tommy John performed 8 innings of surgery on the Toronto Blue Jays , while the Angel bats did their own surgery on 4 Blue Jays pitchers in a 14-3 rout at the Big "A."  The Angels scored 5 times in the 2nd and again in the 3rd, chasing Jays starter Jim Acker after 2 innings, Jays relievers Bryan Clark and Dennis Lamp allowed 5 more in the 3rd. Juan Beniquez and Doug DeCinces had 4 hits each, while Fred Lynn , Rob Wilfong and Dick Schofield each rapped 3 apiece. Brian Downing had the only home run amongst the 19 Angels hits, while Reggie Jackson despite going hitless, slugged a pair of sac flies.  Toronto pitching recorded 8 walks, while Tommy John scattered 9 hits in 8 innings before Jim Slaton pitched a scoreless 9th. 4/8/84: Sample singles home winning run as Rangers outslug Yankees, 8-7

Billy Sample 's 4th hit of the game, an RBI single rallied the Texas Rangers to a wild, wooly 8-7 victory over the Yankees in a raucous series finale at Arlington Stadium . Wayne Tolleson led off the 9th with his 3rd hit of the game, a single off losing pitcher Jay Howell . After Curtis Wilkerson sacrificed Tolleson to 2nd, Sample's single bounced onto the outfield grass scoring Tolleson with the winning run. Sample and Buddy Bell each paced the Rangers with 4 hits apiece, with the Ranger hit total reaching 21, doubling the Yankees, who had 10. Don Mattingly was the big bat for the Yankees, getting three hits on a 2-run homer in the 6th, an RBI triple in the 8th and an RBI double in the 9th, which tied the score at 7-all. 4/8/84: 10 little Indians rally past Royals, 6-4

10 little Indian boys went on the warpath in the 7th inning in Kansas City , handing the Royals a stunning 6-4 loss, earning a series split in the process.  The Royals had scored twice in the 4th on a pair of solo homers by Jorge Orta and Steve Balboni and 2 more times in the 6th on a bases-loaded single by Butch Davis , which helped chase Tribe starter Rick Sutcliffe from the game. Bud Black was cruising through 6 innings, holding the Tribe to 3 hits while striking out 6. He would not get a single out in the 7th, when the first 5 of the 10 little Indians singled and all scored with the key hit being a 2-run bases loaded single by Carmelo Castillo , pinch-hitting for Otis Nixon .  After Brett Butler singled home George Vukovich with the 3rd Tribe run chasing Bud Black, Mark Huismann retired Tony Bernazard on a pop to 1st. Then the 7th little Indian, Julio Franco tripled home the go-ahead runs and was singled home himself by Andre Thornton . 10 little Indi...

4/8/84: Murray keeps Orioles soaring in sweep of Twins, 9-3

Eddie Murray kept the defending world champion Orioles unbeaten at the Metrodome , slugging a pair of homers into the "baggie" as the soaring O's belted the Twins , 9-3. The win gave the Champs a sweep of the Twins, thanks in large part to Murray's bat, which yielded 2 home runs and 4 RBI's and Dennis Martinez 's complete game pitching.  Murray's homers came in the 2nd, a leadoff shot off Al Williams and again in the 7th, a 2-run shot off Rick Lysander . Murray also had an RBI single in the 6th. Jim Dwyer had 3 singles, while Al Bumbry also recorded a triple. The Twins lone damage off Martinez came in the 2nd on back-to-back singles by Gary Gaetti and Tim Laudner with 1 out. They scored with 2 outs on Darrell Brown 's single and Tim Tuefel 's 2-run double, which also scored Brown.  The Orioles salted the game away with a 3-inning stretch of runs, scoring 2 in the 6th, 3, including Murray's 2nd homer in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th. 4/8/84: The Joy of Six; Walker's career day carries Chisox past Tigers in 12

It was Tom Seaver 's debut, but Greg Walker stole the show with a 6-for-6 afternoon, the 6th hit being the game-winner in the bottom of the 12th as the Sox stunned the Tigers , 5-4. Here's how Walker's Day went:  2nd: Single and stolen base. 4th: Single, run scored. 6th: Single. 8th: 2-run homer. 10th: Double. 12th: Doubled, scored Harold Baines with winning run. Walker's incredible day upstaged Sox SP Tom Seaver, who pitched 7.1 innings, striking out 3 and walking 4. It also upstaged Kirk Gibson , who slugged 2 home runs for the 2nd time in 3 games, driving in all 4 Tiger runs off Seaver. Gibson's 1st homer was a solo in the 2nd, the 2nd coming with 2 on in the 4th. Greg Luzinski 's 1st homer of the season tied the score at 1 in the 2nd, while Walker's homer with Harold Baines on tied it in the 8th. 4/7/84: Balanced attack rallies Cards past Giants, 5-1

The Cardinals relied on balanced hitting to down the Giants at Candlestick Park , with 7 different Cards getting a hit in a 5-1 win.  After the Giants grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI single by Chili Davis scoring Manny Trillo , the Cards went to work. With 1 out in the top of the 2nd, Andy Van Slyke doubled, he scored one out later on a triple by Ozzie Smith , who then scored on a single by starting pitcher Dave LaPoint . Giant starter Jeff Robinson retired 12 Cards in a row at one point before David Green snapped the string with a deep fly to the left field cheap seats, making it 3-1 after 5-1/2. The Cards put it away with 2 more runs in the 8th off Robinson and reliever Frank Williams , starting with a 1-out single by Lonnie Smith . Smith then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd when Ken Oberkfell barely beat out an infield single to Bob Brenly at 1st. 4/7/84: Thompson thunders early, but Marshall supplies late lightning as Dodgers rally past Pirates

Pirates ' slugger Jason Thompson picked up where he left off in the previous game, supplying early thunder with 2 home runs , 5RBI in his 1st 2 at-bats, but the Dodgers struck for late lightning courtesy of Mike Marshall 's 3-run homer off Don Robinson in the bottom of the 7th, giving the boys in Blue an 8-5 victory at the "Ravine."  Thompson struck 1st in the 1st with Marvell Wynne at 2nd, his 2nd homer in as many at-bats dating to the previous game, when his 3-run blast off Tom Niedenfuer rallied the Pirates to a late win. The Dodgers answered Thompson in the home half of the 1st, when after Steve Sax reached on a lead-off error by Johnny Ray, Pedro Guerrero crushed a 2-run blast off John Candelaria tied the score at 2. It didn't take Thompson long to strike again off Dodger starter Alejandro Pena when in the 3rd inning after 2 out, Ray walked, Bill Madlock singled and Thompson crushed a 3-run shot giving the Bucs a 5-2 lead. 4/7/84: Trout pitches 7 innings, drives in 2, Gwynn lines to Ryno for game-ending DP as Cubs score 1st win

It took 3 games, but the Cubs finally got the 1st win out of the way in dramatic fashion as Ryne Sandberg caught a Tony Gwynn liner and turned the game-ending DP in a 4-2 win over the Padres in front of a stunned Saturday night crowd at San Diego . Lee Smith , in relief of starter Steve Trout and Rich Bordi, got leadoff man Luis Salazar to ground to short. Alan Wiggins then walked and promptly stole second setting it up for Gwynn, who hit a sizzling liner to Ryne Sandberg at 2nd, who then threw to Leon Durham at 1st for the walk-off DP .  Smith got the save for starter Steve Trout, who pitched 7 solid innings and contributed with his bat as well, lining a bases-loaded single , bringing in 2 runs in a 3-run 4th inning. Battery mate Jody Davis contributed the other Cub run in the inning with a bases-loaded walk. Ramirez doubled in the 3rd, singled home a run in the 4th, doubled and scored on Gerald Perry 's go-ahead RBI single in the 6th and singled again in the 8th. Keystone mate Glenn Hubbard also doubled twice and scored twice, while Bob Horner and starting pitcher Pete Falcone , each had 3 hits with Falcone himself driving in a run.  The Braves had 16 hits but stranded 13 while Montreal erased a 4-0 Braves lead via the longball in the 5th with Tim Wallach and starting pitcher David Palmer each slugging 2-run homers to tie the score. Samuel went 4-6 with 2 doubles, a triple and single plus 3 stolen bases, including 2 daring steals of 3rd. 4/7/84: Despite wildness, Cocanower outduels Langston with help from defense, 3-2

Usually when you walk 7, it's not a good sign of your pitching ability. For Jaime Cocanower , if you got the defense to back it up, 7 walks aren't quite that bad. The Brewers defense backed up Cocanower and reliever Tom Tellman with 4 double plays , enough to help Cocanower outduel Mark Langston in a 3-2 Brewer win over the Mariners at the Kingdome . Of the 4 double plays, 3 were started by Jim Gantner , including a key DP in the 8th with M's at 1st and 2nd and Tellman brought in to replace Cocanower. DP's were also turned in the 1st, 2nd and 6th, with Al Cowens grounding into those in the 6th and 8th. GET ME REWRITE! The "Whistler's" saga begins

As posted earlier, the Red Sox had a rough day against the A's with the main story being the defensive woes of Jackie Guiterrez , who bobbled and bungled his way through the first 2 innings with 3 errors being before replaced by Glenn Hoffman in the 3rd. Of course, this is a C&D recreation of 1984 , so we're coming up with different ways to rewrite 1984 storylines,  One actual storyline of 1984 was the Sawx season opener against the Angels and yes, Guiterrez actually threw that one away with a throwing error scoring the winning runs for the Halos . The common thread in the Guiterrez games so far real and otherwise has been starting pitcher Bruce Hurst , who started the Anaheim opener and thanks to Jackie's "blue" throwing got a no decision. When Hurst threw the pitches in C&D against Oakland , he threw them away a lot earlier, so if there is a villain so far in 1984, it's " The Whistler ." About that nickname, it seems between pitches i...

4/7/84: Lansford slams Sawx, 11-5

The A's gave Bruce Hurst his "wurst" start of the season, via a grand slam by Carney Lansford in the 2nd and a " hat trick " of sorts by shortstop Jackie Gutierrez , 3 errors in the first 2 innings as the A's slammed the Sawx, 11-5. Boston did jump off to an early lead on a leadoff single/SB by Jerry Remy , which was cashed in by Wade Boggs ' RBI single , 1-0. In the bottom half, Rickey Henderson took advantage of Gutierrez's generosity by reaching on the 1st of his 3 errors. Bruce Bocthe singled Rickey to 3rd, then Lansford's sac fly scored Rickey with the tying run.  Gutierrez's generous glove netted the A's 5 more runs in the 2nd, with the big blow supplied by Lansford's grand slam. After Gutierrez batted in the top of the 3rd, the Red Sox replaced him with Glenn Hoffman . No further errors, but Hurst survived to the 5th, when a string of 3 singles and a walk brought in Rich Gale for long relief and for good measure, Bruce B...

4/7/84: Stieb stifles Halos with help from the long ball, 4-0

Blue Jays ace Dave Stieb stifled an aging Angels attack on 4 hits and got some help from the long ball with 3 solo homers as the Jays scored a 4-0 whitewash at the Big "A".  The Jays struck first in the top of the 5th on George Bell 's 2nd home run of the year. The next 2 runs would come on solo flights as Cliff Johnson hit his 2nd in as many games in the 7th and Rance Mulliniks managed a leadoff bomb to open the 9th off reliever Curt Kaufman . The Jays followed up Mulliniks' blast with a triple by Lloyd Moseby , who promptly scored on Willie Upshaw 's sac fly. Stieb brilliantly painted the corners like Picasso , striking out 9 hapless Angels in 9 dominant innings including striking out the side in the 1st.* His Halos counterpart, Ken Forsch pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 6 before giving way to Kaufman in the 8th. April 7, 1984-The image remains fresh in our mind, Jack Morris fires strike 3 past a swinging Ron Kittle, then jumps in the arms of catcher Lance Parrish to complete a nationally televised no-hitter. The image is still there, but C&D can alter history with a few rolls of the dice.
