4/14/84: "Just hit it, baby" M's top Twins 5-3

Mariners' rookie Alvin Davis slugged his 1st homer of the 1984 season replay and it was enough to hold off the Twins by a 5-3 final at the Metrodome . The Twins had a 2-1 lead entering the top of the 5th inning when the M's made their move on back-to-back 1-out singles by Larry Milbourne and Gorman Thomas, putting runners on the corners. Pat Putnam's 4-6 fielder's choice scored Milbourne with the tying run, then Davis delivered with a 2-run blast past the RF "Baggie" putting the M's up 4-2.  Lefty Mark Langston pitched himself into an ugly mess in the bottom of the inning walking Mark Brunansky, then hitting big, burly Kent Hrbek. Mickey Hatcher then flied to left, followed by a bases-loading walk to Dave Engle. Langston recovered by getting Gary Gaetti and Tim Laudner out on called strike threes, wriggling himself from the jam. 4/8/14: New year, same "error" at the "Mistake"

It may have been a new season at the "Mistake" but one thing is for certain, it was the same old "error." The Orioles spoiled the home debut of the Indians , who gave the crowd of 57,114 the same old Indian baseball by way of the butchered baseball, committing 3 errors in the first 4 innings:  -1st, Jim Dwyer safe on an error by Julio Franco SS -2nd, Rick Dempsey safe on a 2-base messter-piece by Pat Tabler (1B) that scored Wayne Gross with the 1st Bird run. -4th, Dwyer safe on a dribbled dribbler by Ron Hassey. Usually sure-handed Cal Ripken Jr. even joined in on the fun with his own error in the Tribe 2nd and Eddie Murray ran the Orioles out of the 3rd inning with a 9-5 DP.  Mistakes aside, the Orioles hung on for an 8-5 win over the Tribe behind a 13-hit attack and late home runs from Rick Dempsey and Wayne Gross. 4/13/84: Reds take advantage of early Astro blunders, 6-1

Maybe the fact that it was Friday the 13th may have had something to do with it, but a couple of early blunders from the Astros gave the Reds an early boost on their way to a 6-1 win at a deflated Astrodome .  It all started when 1B Ray Knight badly mishandled an Eddie Milner bouncer but would get worse when after Milner stole 2nd. Dave Concepion's bouncer to Bill Doran met that same level of misfortune, 1st and 3rd with nobody out on 2 misplays in the 1st. The runs scored on back-to-back singles by Dan Driessen and Dave Parker before Nick Esasky's sac fly to center gave the Astros their 1st out. Driessen scored on the SF, giving the Reds a 3-0 cushion. The 'Stros got one of those runs back in the bottom of the 1st on a lead-off single by Bill Doran, who stole 2nd and scored on Jerry Mumphrey's RBI single. That's as close as the Astros got, with the Reds scoring 2 in the 3rd and 1 more in the 4th, chasing Joe Niekro. Mario Soto would cruise from there, striking...

4/13/84: Cards prevail in extras over Bucs, 3-2 (10)

Willie McGee 's bases loaded sac fly to center with 2 outs scored Ozzie Smith with the winning run as the Cardinals nipped the Pirates in a 10-inning thriller, 3-2 at Busch Stadium .  The rally began with 1 out in the 10th when Ozzie Smith singled to center. He advanced to 3rd on Tito Landrum's subsequent single on a "+" result, which prompted Pirate skipper Chuck Tanner to take out starter John Candelaria , replacing him with Cecilio Guante. Guante walked PH Steve Braun to load the bases, then got McGee to fly to center, scoring "The Wizard" with the walk-off run.  Candelaria pitched 9-1/3 innings, striking out 6, walking 2 and made a big contribution with 2 outs in the top of the 7th, as he solo homered off Card starter Dave LaPoint, tying the score at 2. Bill Madlock drove in the first Pirate run in the first on a sac fly to left scoring Marvell Wynne, who had hit a leadoff single, stole 2nd then advanced to 3rd on a Lee Lacy fly to center.  Cardinal ...

4/13/84: Gooden erratic, Cubs hang on to outlast Mets, 8-7

Dwight Gooden struck out 8 in his second start but walked 8 as the Mets wasted a 5-0 lead, giving the Cubs a chance behind some clutch hitting in a wild and wooly 8-7 triumph at an even wilder Wrigley Field in the Cubs' home opener.  "Robert & Natalie & Elliot & Dyan star in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, tonight at 7 on WGN Channel 9 ."  The Mets struck for 5 off Cub lefty Steve Trout in a 9-batter 2nd inning highlighted by a 2-run double by Gooden and 2-run single by Ron Gardenhire . The Cubs would rally behind an erratic Gooden in the bottom of the 3rd, sending 8 batters in a 2-run/4-walk/1 hit inning. The Cubs chased Gooden for good in the 6th on a pair of errors by the battery of Junior Ortiz and Gooden and a pair of walks, the latter of which was a bases-loaded walk by Gary Matthews , then Leon Durham tied it with a 2-run single, chasing Gooden. 4/13/84: Lea 5-hits Phils, Expos win 3-0

Expos RHP Charlie Lea limited the Phillies to 5 hits while Tim Raines supplied some late insurance with a 2-run homer as the Expos won their home opener by a 3-0 score.  Le Expos struck 1st on an RBI single by Angel Salazar with the bases loaded, scoring Andre Dawson while Jerry Koosman kept the Expos off the board further with 6 innings of 5-hit ball. Larry Andersen relieved Koosman in the 7th, giving up a leadoff single by Charlie Lea, who was then forced out on a FC to 1st by Pete Rose . Bryan Little bunted Rose to 2nd, then Tim Raines put the icing on the cake with a 2-run homer making the score 3-0 after 7. Lea had a couple of significant threats in the 5th and 6th. Von Hayes led off the 5th with a double, then advanced to 3rd on a deep Bo Diaz fly to left. Ivan DeJesus walked but Lea emerged from the wreckage with a strikeout of Jerry Koosman and a Juan Samuel lineout to short.  Len Matuszek singled to start the 6th, stole 2nd and picked up an extra base wh...

4/13/84: Downing, Lynn pace Angels early, hold off Rickey, A's 6-3

Brian Downing 's 2-run single in the 2nd and Fred Lynn 's 2-run homer in the 3rd staked the Angels to an early 4-0 lead, then had to hold off a Rickey Henderson -fueled A's rally to score a 6-3 triumph at The Coliseum . Henderson went 4-4 with three singles and a solo homer, but the Downing-Lynn combo, coupled with a 3-4 performance by Doug DeCinces would carry the Halos to their 2nd straight win in the East Bay. Ageless lefty Tommy John went the distance, outdueling Oakland's combo of Steve McCatty and Ray Burris.  Fast Facts: This C&D replay vastly differed from the actual 4/13 game , which was won by the A's in a 2-1 walk-off. 4/13/84: Jays blunder but rally behind Jesse Barfield, 7-5

The fact that it was Friday the 13th may have had something to do with it, but the Toronto Blue Jays blundered their way to 5 errors against the Texas Rangers in Arlington . Jesse Barfield , who made one of the 5 boo-boos, managed to navigate past the errors with a clutch 2-run homer in the top of the 6th, rallying the Jays to a 7-5 win. The Jays scored 2 in the top of the 1st but recorded 2 of their 5 miscues in the bottom of the inning, leading to 4 Texas runs on just 1 hit, a single by George Wright . The way the runs were meted out was more indicative of Dave Stieb 's pitching, but the errors by Barfield and Alfredo Griffin cast an ugly pall for the Jays, which would find a way to overcome, thanks to star slugger Barfield.  The Ranger lead was 5-3 in the top of the 6th when Barfield struck. After a leadoff bouncer to short by Cliff Johnson , Ranger starter Danny Darwin hit George Bell with a pitch. After Bell stole 2nd, Barfield tied the game with a deep blast to left tha...

4/13/84: Brewers suffer through a "Black"-out in KC

There was a "Black"-out in Kansas City on Friday night but hardly anyone felt any effects. Anyone, except the Milwaukee Brewers who felt the full effects of one Bud Black . Black went the distance, striking out 7 while allowing 2 hits and a walk in a 3-0 shutout at Royals Stadium , limiting the Brewers without a hit or baserunner until the top of the 5th, when Ben Oglivie singled with 1 out. Black then issued a walk to Mark Brouhard but then induced Jim Sundberg to ground into an around-the-horn 5-4-3 DP, ending the Brewer threat. Black allowed a 1-out single to Charlie Moore in the 6th, then one inning later allowed his final baserunner when Cecil Cooper reached on an error by LF Butch Davis. Black then retired the final 9 Brewers.  Sharing top honors with Black was Jorge Orta, who literally outhit the Brew Crew by singling in the 1st, doubling in the 3rd and tripling to lead off the 8th. The up-and-down Yankees would be "up" again on this Friday the 13th as John "The Count" Montefusco pitched 7+ innings, limiting the White Sox to 2 runs, 8 hits in a solid 6-2 win at the "Stadium." Montefusco was shelled in the 2nd though, as the Sox got a 1-out single from Tom Paciorek , followed by a triple by Vance Law and subsequent single double by Marc Hill , putting the ChiSox on top, 2-0.  But the Yanks took command in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings making the Sox starter slide right down the "Bannister." 4/13/84: Tigers strike for 6 in the 4th to rock BoSox, 12-6

Marty Castillo doubled to center, Rusty Kuntz singled him home, then was driven home by Tom Brookens ' RBI triple, which marked the abrupt end of Bruce Hurst's afternoon.  Mike Brown didn't fare much better, giving up back-to-back singles by Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell , but caught a break when Trammell was picked off trying to steal 2nd.
