4/11/84: Expos hang on to beat Reds behind Bryn Smith, 4-3

The Expos used balanced hitting and the right arm of Bryn Smith to hold off one last-minute "Cobra" sting in a 4-3 triumph at Riverfront Stadium .    The Reds struck first in the bottom of the 2nd on a 2-out solo homer by Ron Oester . It didn't take the Expos long to match that as Bryan Little led off the top of the 3rd with a double, then scored on Tim Raines ' RBI single. The score remained tied at 1 in the 5th when with 2 outs, Raines singled, stole second and scored on a double by Andre Dawson . Raines would again figure prominently in the Expos next run in the 7th when he drew a one-out walk, stole 2nd and scored on Gary Carter 's RBI single, making the score 3-1. Bryn Smith held the Reds to 2 hits through 7 innings and was working on a string of 11 straight retired Reds when catcher Brad Gulden led off the bottom of the 8th with a single. Ron Oester slow-rolled Gulden to 2nd but the rally fizzled on a Tom Foley fly to right and Dave Concepion pop to s...

4/11/84: BoSox get the "Eck" out of Seattle, 9-4

The Red Sox scored 3 runs in each of the first 2 innings, then rode the pitching of Dennis Eckersley to a 9-4 win over the Mariners in the series finale at the Kingdome . The win snapped a 4-game losing streak for the visitors from Boston. After Jerry Remy struck out to open the game, Dwight Evans reached on a E-2 by Bob Kearney , followed by a walk to Wade Boggs . Jim Rice then reached on a E-5 by Barry Bonnell , setting up Mike Easler with the bases loaded, Easler unloading with a triple to give the Sawx a 3-0 cushion.  The Sox doubled their pleasure in the 2nd, getting 3 more runs on a leadoff walk by Glenn Hoffman and single by Gary Allenson putting Sox at 1st/2nd with 0 out. After Jerry Remy flied to center, Dwight Evans singled to load the bases, then Wade Boggs singled home Hoffman.  Jim Rice brought Allenson home to make it 5-0, then Easler bounced one to the shortstop to make it a 6-0 score after an  inning and a half.  The Mariners got 2 off of Den...

4/11/84: Brewers ride early homers, Moose Haas's 10 K's to an 8-2 triumph over the Angels

The Brewers left the ballpark early and often, while Moose Haas struck out 10 Halos in 7+ innings for an 8-2 triumph in front of a stunned crowd at the Big "A." It all began in the top of the 1st when Randy Ready rushed a Ron Romanick fastball over the left field bleachers, followed shortly thereafter by a Cecil Cooper solo shot to right. Romanick gave up homers to 2 of the first 3 Brewers and would give up another in the 2nd when Jim Sundberg found the left field bleachers as well. While Romanick was giving them up, Moose Haas was dealing, striking out 5 in the first 3 innings including striking out the side in the 3rd. (Schofield, Pettis, Jackson)  Milwaukee added another run in the 4th on leadoff singles by Ben Oglivie and Jim Gantner . Charlie Moore scored Oglivie with a double, extending the lead to 4-0. Haas struck out Doug DeCinces and Fred Lynn in the 4th, giving him 7 strikeouts through 4. Dick Schofield became strikeout victim #8 in the 5th. Another Milwauke...

4/11/84: ChiSox rally in 8th to beat Tribe, 7-4

The White Sox rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to beat the Tribe by a final score of 7-4 for their 2nd win of the season. The Indians struck 1st in the top of the 1st on a lead-off walk by Brett Butler , who then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a single by Tony Bernazard . Butler scored on a sac fly by Julio Franco . The ChiSox tied it in the bottom of the 2nd on a leadoff homer by Ron Kittle , his second of the season. The score remained tied until the top of the 4th when the Indians came out running again on a leadoff walk by Julio Franco. Franco stole 2nd, then advanced to 3rd on fly to center by Broderick Perkins , eventually scoring on a single by Brook Jacoby . Jacoby took off and stole 2nd, then scored on a 2-out single by Mike Hargrove , making the score 3-1 after 3-1/2. The Sox pulled to within 3-2 when Greg Walker led off the bottom of the 4th with a solo homer but fell 2 runs behind again in the top of the 5th when Butler tripled with 1 out and scored whe...

4/11/84: Boddicker blanks Royals, 5-0

Mike Boddicker found the strike zone while Larry Gura didn't, thus the difference for the once-beaten Orioles as they blanked the Royals by a 5-0 final at the " Bird Nest "   Early on, it was an onslaught of hits that bedeviled Boddicker, with the Royals collecting 6 hits off the righty in the 1st 3 innings. While Boddicker was able to dodge those hits, Gura's main problem was the strike zone, issuing 6 walks and hitting Cal Ripken Jr. Those walks and HBP would gut Gura starting in the 3rd, walking Eddie Murray and Gary Roenicke with the bases full. An RBI single by Dan Ford in the 4th, a sac fly by Ken Singleton and RBI double by Rich Dauer in the 5th took care of the Oriole scoring.  Boddicker struck out 5, walking 2 to go the distance and score his 2nd win, the Orioles 5th in 6 games. Gura made it to the 7th, with Joe Beckwith pitching 2 perfect mop-up innings to salvage the Royals loss, which dropped them to 4-3.  BAL 5-7-0 KCR 0-7-0 WP-Boddicker (2-0...

4/10/84: Just a cold, dreary night at Candlestick

The Giants sleepwalked their way to an ugly defeat at the "Stick" with 3 errors and a couple of long Pirate belts highlighting a 10-3 Buc mutiny at the "Stick." The Pirate belts were of the 2-run variety, one by Doug Frobel in the 2nd, the other by Jason Thompson in the 7th, just enough to put the Giants out of their misery, that and a CG pitching effort by Larry McWilliams was enough to pull the Bucs record to 3-3, same as the Giants. It wasn't a total loss for the Giants though, utility man John Rabb did slug a 3-run homer in the 9th to avert the ugly shutout, but not the ugly loss.  PIT 10-16-2 SFG 3-9-3 WP-McWilliams (1-0) LP-Krukow (0-1) HR-Thompson (4) Frobel (1) Rabb (1) PIT 3-3 SFG 3-3

4/10/84: Cards "walk" past Padres, 10-3

The Cardinals took advantage of an ineffective Andy Hawkins and "walked" past the Padres by a 10-3 count at "The Murph" in San Diego .  Hawkins walked 6 and hit a batter in 2+ IP as the Cards flew out to a 7-0 lead through 3-1/2 innings while George Hendrick tripled and David Green added a solo homer as part of a 12-hit attack. Bob Forsch pitched 8.2 innings, scattering 9 Padres hits including Steve Garvey 's 1st home run of the season. The Cards evened their record at 3-3, while the Padres fell to 2-4. 4/10/84: A tale of 2 games, pitcher's duel and slugfest with Braves winning 9-6

It was a Charles Dickens type of game at Fulton County Stadium , a pitcher's duel for 4-1/2 innings, followed by a slugfest which the Braves won, outlasting the Mets , 9-6. Starters Craig McMurtry and Ron Darling traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the 1st 4-1/2 innings, Darling striking out 5 while McMurtry struck out 2. In the bottom of the 5th, the hitters took over, with Claudell Washington leading off with a single and a steal. After Rafael Ramirez fouled to catcher Ron Hodges, Gerald Perry singled for his 2nd hit of the game. The ball was fielded by Mookie Wilson who fired a strong throw home to nail Washington. Dale Murphy then took matters into his own hand, slugging a 2-run homer to give the Braves a 2-0 lead after 5. The Mets settled for a run in the 6th on a bases-loaded walk by Keith Hernandez but would fall further behind as the Braves turned a lead-off walk and stolen base by Glenn Hubbard into an RBI single by Bruce Benedict, making the score 3-1. The Braves...

4/10/84: Just like old times: Rose hustles Reds er, Expos to 5-2 win

It was just like old times at Riverfront Stadium , only the uniform was different as Pete Rose started a 9th-inning rally with his usual hustle, leading Montreal to a 5-2 win over the Reds .  With the score tied at 2, Rose led off the inning with an infield single that just eluded former teammate Dave Concepion, 2B Bryan Little then sacrificed to Tom Hume, moving Rose to 2nd. Tim Raines then lined to 2nd for the 2nd out, then Andre Dawson singled to Nick Esasky at 3rd, Rose stopping at 3rd. Gary Carter broke the tie with another single to 3rd, his 2nd run-scoring hit of the game. Tim Wallach and Tito Francona added insurance RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-2. Jeff Reardon, who came on in the 8th, save for a 2-out error in the 9th, got the win in relief of newly acquired Andy McGaffigan and lefty RP Gary Lucas. The Expos scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd off starter Joe Price and carried that lead until the 7th when the Reds rallied to score 2 off McGaffigan and Lucas w...

4/10/84: The Express derails Philly's 4-game winning streak, 6-5

Nolan Ryan fired 8 strikeouts in a gutsy complete game effort, gutsy enough to derail the Philly 4-game winning streak as the Astros win the Phils ' home opener at the Vet , 6-5. Houston struck 1st on a lead-off single by Bill Doran , who was later caught stealing. Terry Puhl then singled with 1 out but was forced on Phil Garner 's bouncer to short. Jose Cruz singled Garner to 2nd, followed by Jerry Mumphrey 's RBI single. The Phils struck against Nolan Ryan in the home half of the first on a 1-out solo homer by Len Matuszek , followed by back-to-back Ryan K's of Mike Schmidt and Joe Lefebvre . Ryan also struck out Glenn Wilson and Von Hayes to open the Phil 2nd.  Ivan DeJesus led off the Philly 3rd with a single and was sacrificed to 2nd by starting pitcher John Denny . Rookie speedster Juan Samuel showed off his powerful side, striking a 2-run homer to give Philly a 3-1 lead after 3. Then came the pivotal inning for Ryan and the Astros, starting with a lead-...

4/10/84: BS for the BoSox as Cowens strikes again in the pinch

No doubt there were a few BoSox fans yelling "BS" at their radio/TV on this night, as John Henry Johnson recorded a blown save, allowing Mariners slugger Al Cowens to come through in the pinch at the Kingdome in a come-from-behind 4-3 win which ruined a gem for Sox lefty Bob Ojeda who had a 1-hitter through 7 which thanks to the leaky Sox pen, was charged with a frustrating loss.   After 2 scoreless innings, the Sox struck 1st on a 2-out triple by Jerry Remy which was promptly cashed in by Dwight Evans ' single. Evans then scored from 1st on a double by Wade Boggs , who got as far as 3rd on a single by Jim Rice before Mike Easler hit a force to short, ending the top of the 3rd inning. That's how it stood until the top of the 8th when Tony Armas slugged his 4th homer of the season, extending the lead to a comfortable 3-0. Then, the wheels fell off. Bob Ojeda allowed just one hit through 7 innings, striking out 6 Mariners. It all began innocently enough in the ...

April 10, 1916: Jays, A's in epic slugfest at the Coliseum

35 runs, 36 hits, a combined 10 home runs. That's what transpired at the Oakland Coliseum where the Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland A's put on an epic slugfest won by the Jays, 19-16. The A's started it off with a 4-run bottom of the 1st, all of the runs coming on homers off Luis Leal , a 3-run blast by Joe Morgan , then a solo shot by Bruce Bocthe . George Bell led off the Toronto 2nd with a solo homer, followed by a 2-run shot by Jesse Barfield , hit first of 2. Oakland got a 1-out solo home run by Davey Lopes to extend the lead to 5-3. Then, it got nuts. The Jays chased A's starter Lary Sorenson with an 8-run third which started with a Lloyd Moseby single and ended 10 batters later with a Cliff Johnson strikeout. Moseby did add a 2nd hit that inning, a 3-run homer. The score was 11-5 after 2-1/2. It remained 11-5 until the bottom of the 4th, when Garry Hancock walked, Mike Heath singled and Donnie Hill doubled home Hancock. Luis Leal was relieved by Dennis L...

4/10/84: Brewers win "Battle of the Mikes", 2-1

Caldwell bested Witt in the " Battle of the Mikes " at the Big A as the Brewers hung on for a 2-1 over the Angels in the series opener at Anaheim . The Brewers struck first on a 1-out solo homer by Robin Yount and carried the 1-0 lead into the 6th when lead-off man Randy Ready hit a lead-off single. After Robin Yount flied to right, Cecil Cooper slow rolled a bouncer to Bobby Grich , moving Ready to 2nd. Ted Simmons then singled home Ready, extending the lead to 2-0. The Angels struck in the home half of the inning off Caldwell when Doug DeCinces hit a solo homer with one out. The Angels rallied with 2 outs on back-to-back singles by Fred Lynn and Bobby Grich, but the rally ended when Bob Boone bounced a force to Yount at short. Mike Witt went the distance, striking out 6 Brewers and scattering 6 hits, but Caldwell turned out to be the better Mike, striking out 3 while scattering 10 hits and inducing a DP in the 7th. Caldwell put out one last rally, retiring the H...

4/10/84: Indians come out running against White Sox, 4-2

Cleveland came out of the blocks with a strong start, scoring 3 runs in the 1st on their way to a 4-2 victory over the White Sox at Comiskey Park . Speedy lead-off man Brett Butler started things off with a mishandled chopper by Sox pitcher Lamarr Hoyt , which was ruled an error, the first of three for the bumbling Sox. Butler stole 2nd, then scored on Tony Bernazard 's RBI single. Tony B then stole 2nd, stopping at 3rd when Julio Franco 's line drive dropped in front of Harold Baines in right. Andre Thornton singled home Bernazard, but Julio Franco was thrown out at 3rd when Dave Stegman made a strong throw from center to catch Franco. After Pat Tabler singled Thornton to 3rd, Ron Hassey scored Thornton with an RBI double, Tabler to 3rd. Hoyt got Brook Jacoby to fly to center and George Vukovich to bounce to 2nd, ending the inning. The Sox got a run off of Neal Heaton in the 2nd on a double by Tom Paciorek and single by Ron Kittle . The Tribe got that run back in t...

4/10/84: Orioles unbeaten start goes Bye-Bye thanks to Balboni, Royals, 6-3

Just like that, the Orioles 4-0 start went "Bye-Bye." Kansas City 's star slugger Steve "Bye-Bye" Balboni went 2-4 with a 2nd inning double and a big insurance marker of a 2-run homer in the 8th as the Royals handed the defending champion Orioles their 1st loss of the season, 6-3. Balboni's 8th inning bomb was his 3rd homer of the season, coming off of Oriole starter Scott McGregor .  Don Slaught was another big run producer for the Royals, driving in runs with a single in the 2nd scoring Balboni and driving in Hal McRae with a triple in the 4th. McRae singled and scored twice for the 4-2 Royals. Paul Splittorf pitched 6.2 innings of double play-inducing ball for KC , which turned 4 of the twin killings to slow down the Orioles. The Royal bullpen would secure the win with Mark Huismann pitching out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out John Shelby with 2 outs in the 7th. Save for an Eddie Murray solo homer in the 8th and a Rich Dauer 2-out single ...

4/10/84: Despite triple play, Yankees outlast Twins in 14, 9-8

Butch Wynegar lined into the season's first triple play , hitting a line drive to Twins 3B Gary Gaetti with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the 1st inning in a game the Yankees would win in 14 innings, 9-8.  The Gaetti TP came after the Yankees had jumped off to a 4-0 lead on singles by Willie Randolph , Ken Griffey and Lou Pinella followed by a HBP of Don Baylor and 3 walks by Dave Winfield, Toby Harrah and Don Mattingly. Pinella's single was the only run-scoring hit while the walks to Winfield/Harrah/Mattingly each forced in a run. Frank Viola started for the Twins but managed to make it to the 8th.  Phil Niekro held the Twins to 3 hits through 5, but a 5-run rally put the Twins on top in the 6th, highlighted by a string of 4 2-out hits including doubles by Tom Brunansky and Jim Eisenreich, with Gary Gaetti's 2-run single giving the Twins a 5-4 lead. Butch Wynegar would smack a 2-run homer with 2 outs off Viola in the 6th with Don Mattingly on base (...

4/10/84: Tigers roar past Rangers behind Whitaker, Petry 8-4

The Detroit Tigers overcame an early 3-0 deficit, roaring past the Texas Rangers in the Tiger Stadium opener, 8-4. Tiger starter Dan Petry gave up a single to Billy Sample and a walk to Buddy Bell before an out was recorded in the 1st. After a fly out by George Wright and a strikeout of Larry Parrish , Gary Ward slugged a 3-run homer to give Texas the early lead. The Tigers roared back in their half of the inning, getting a lead-off double by Lou Whitaker and a single by Alan Trammell , moving Whitaker to 3rd. Rangers starter Dave Stewart then walked Darrell Evans and Lance Parrish , the latter walk scoring Whitaker. Kirk Gibson then hit a sac fly to left scoring Trammell.  After Larry Herndon flied to center, Dave Bergman singled home Evans, Parrish to 3rd, followed by a 2-run triple by Chet Lemon , giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead after 1. Tiger bats added 3 more in the 3rd off Stewart with Dave Bergman getting a 1-out single and Howard Johnson drawing a 1-out walk. Lo...

4/9/84: Dodgers run, slug their way past Cubs, 8-6

Dodger Blue turned into a run-and-gun offense as they outlasted the Cubbies by a score of 8-6 in front of an Oscar Night crowd at Dodger Stadium . The Dodgers ran their way around the bases just as often as the Oscar winners walked to the podium, stealing 5 bases, including 2 from Dodger stalwart Bill Russell . Other Dodger thieves were Steve Sax , Ken Landreaux and Greg Brock , who also added his 1st home run of the season, a solo shot to go with a 2-run shot by Pedro Guerrerro , his 2nd homer in as many games. The Dodgers turned that run-and-gun into a 5-0 lead through 3, chasing Cub starter Chuck Rainey , but the Cub bats managed to get to Dodger starter Jerry Reuss , scoring 2 runs each in the 4th and 5th, the 5th inning runs coming on back-to-back blows by Gary "Sarge" Matthews and Ron "Penguin" Cey . The Dodgers rebuilt their lead on Brock's leadoff homer in the bottom of the 5th, only to have that lead cut again in the 6th, courtesy of a lead-off e...

4/9/84: Reds snap 4-game losing streak, hold off Expos, 6-4

The Reds got three doubles from Ron Oester and home runs from Dann Bilardello and Nick Esasky, making them hold up despite a spirited Expos rally, hanging on to beat Montreal , 6-4.  The Reds struck 1st in the bottom of the 2nd when Duane Walker and Oester slugged back-to-back doubles with 1 out, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead which later swelled to 3-0 on Bilardello's 1st home run of the season. Montreal got a run off of Reds starter Jeff Russell in the 4th when Bryan Little 's lead-off double was cashed in by Mike Stenhouse . The Reds chased Expos starter Bill Gullickson in the 6th on a lead-off homer by Nick Esasky , a single by Duane Walker and Ron Oester's 3rd double of the game which scored Walker from 1st. Jeff Russell singled home Oester to make the score 6-1 after 6. Russell would run out of gas in the 8th when Montreal made their last-ditch move, starting with Angel Salazar 's lead-off single. After Max Venable flied to left, Pete Rose singled Salazar t...

4/9/84: A's win thriller over Jays, 4-3

The lone American league offering of April 9 was a thriller at the Coliseum as the Oakland A's overcame a top of the 9th solo blast by George Bell with 2 outs with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to stun a shell-shocked bunch of Blue Jays , 4-3.  The Jays struck 1st off A's lefty Tim Conroy , taking advantage of some wildness as Conroy walked Buck Martinez and Alfredo Griffin , leading to a 2-out 2-run double by Damaso Garcia , which scored Griffin all the way from 1st. The score remained 2-0 Jays until the bottom of the 6th, when the A's struck for 2 runs off Jim Clancy , who walked Joe Morgan to open the inning, followed by a mammoth 2-run homer by red-hot Carney Lansford , his 3rd homer in as many games, tying the score at 2. It remained at 2 until the 9th, when A's relief ace Bill Caudill struck out Damaso Garcia to open the inning and got Lloyd Moseby to fly to right. Then Caudill got rung by George Bell, whose 3rd home run of the season gave the Jays a 3-...
