Post #200: Yankees get an Easter parade of home runs, then drop the eggs

It started with an " Easter parade " of home runs. Don Mattingly started it off with a solo homer in the 2nd, Ken Griffey soloed in the 3rd, Oscar Gamble in the 4th and Griffey soloing again in the 5th. Then, the Yankees dropped the "eggs."  The Yanks were cruising along with Shane Rawley when the Rangers rallied for 3 runs in the 6th on a barrage of back-to-back-to-back doubles with 2 outs in the 6th, pulling the Rangers within a run. Then in the 9th off Dave Righetti , Ned Yost led off with a leadoff walk, Wayne Tolleson singled Yost to 2nd. Pinch-hitter Bill Stein then lofted a fly to Omar Moreno in center which turned into well, scrambled eggs. Yost scored on the E-8 with Tolleson moving to 3rd, still nobody out. Billy Sample then grounded one to Andre Robertson at short for another helping of scrambled eggs, Tolleson scoring on the E-6 , Rangers taking a 5-4 lead with still nobody out and Righetti out as well. Jose Rijo would settle down but not before a...

4/22/84: Brock belts 2 homers again, this time in a winning cause as Dodgers pound Padres

When Greg Brock homered twice and drove in 6 runs previously for the Dodgers against the Padres, it was in a game in which the Padres jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Well, Brock homered twice again against the Padres and this time, the Dodgers were in the winning column at Chavez Ravine , 8-3. Brock's heroics started in the 5th with the Dodgers leading 4-3, a solo leadoff home run off Tim Lollar . Then in the 6th after Ken Landreaux slugged a solo shot with 1 out, Brock struck again with Candy Maldonado on base. In his last 2 games, Brock belted 4 home runs, driving in 9, helping to avert a rare Padre sweep at the "Ravine." But it didn't start out well again for the Dodgers, as the Padres jumped out to a 3-0 lead on leadoff error by Steve Sax , Luis Salazar reaching. Salazar stole 2nd, then took 3rd on a throwing error by Steve Yeager. Alan Wiggins drove in Salazar with a sac fly. Steve Garvey singled with 2 outs and scored on Terry Kennedy 's 2-run homer. 4/22/84: Late homer surge rallies ChiSox past Tigers in extras, 6-4

Tiger-killer Greg Walker slugged a 2-out pinch-hit solo homer in the 9th off Juan Berenguer to tie, then Carlton Fisk and Greg Luzinski provided 10th inning homers off Aurelio Lopez to rally the White Sox to a 6-4 win over the Tigers in 10 innings at "The Corner of Michigan and Trumbull."  The Tigers had a 3-2 lead entering the 9th inning and got the 1st 2 outs on a liner to 2nd by Mike Squires and a Berenguer strikeout of Vance Law , who had hit a 2-run homer earlier in the game. Walker, who had gone 6-6 in an earlier replay game against the Tigers, would strike again pinch-hitting for Scott Fletcher, striking one into the RF bleachers for a tie game. The Tiges had a chance in the bottom of the inning off Juan Agosto and Ron Reed with runners at 1st/3rd with 2 out when Darrell Evans lined to 2nd, forcing the 10th. Lopez took over for Berenguer and retired Rudy Law on a grounder to 1st. Carlton Fisk, no stranger to late-inning heroics, grooved a Lopez puff of "...

4/22/84: Lansford slugs 2 homers as A's embarrass Sawx, 10-2

Since I am posting games that were played on Easter Sunday, forgive me if we run across a game or two that "laid an egg." In this case, save for a 2-run rally in the 8th it was that kind of a game for the Red Sox , as the A's jumped out to 9-0 lead after 2-1/2 enroute to a 10-2 win over the egg-on-face Sox at Fenway . Carney Lansford paced the 17-hit attack with 2 home runs, including 1 in a 6-run 3rd which abruptly ended Dennis Eckersley 's afternoon. Also contributing to Eck's poor outing, Mike Davis with a 3-run shot in the 2nd, Dave Kingman followed up his 4-hit effort of the previous game with another one, which like yesterday's, was devoid of his usual " Kong " power.  Steve McCatty pitched 8 solid innings, even though Mike Easler provided the only notable blemish with 4 hits, including a 2-run single in the 8th that made the final a little respectable. 4/22/84: Boddicker 3-hits Twins, Ripken gets 4 hits in 3-1 Oriole win

Mike Boddicker scattered 3 Twins hits, while Cal Ripken scattered 4 hits across the outfield as the Orioles downed the Twins, 3-1 at Memorial Stadium .  Ripken's singles came in the 1st, 4th, 6th and 8th innings. The single in the 4th scored on Eddie Murray 's 2-run homer, while the single in the 8th scored John Shelby with the Birds' 3rd run.  Mike Boddicker was dazzling for the World Series champs of 83 , allowing hits in the 1st, 3rd and 4th, the hit in the 4th coming off the bat of Dave Engle who singled home Kent Hrbek with the lone Twin run. Boddicker struck out just 1 Twin batter but induced enough ground balls to retire the final 13 Twins while improving the Bird record to 11-4. 4/22/84: Astros finish sweep of Braves, 4-2

The Astros erupted for 3 runs on 6 hits in the 6th and held off a late Braves rally to complete a sweep of the struggling Atlanta ballclub by a final of 4-2.  The Astros got RBI singles from Jerry Mumphrey , Phil Garner and Alan Ashby to take a 3-1 lead in the 6th, chasing Brave starter Pete Falcone in the process. The Braves crept closer when Rafael Ramirez doubled home Albert Hall, making the score 3-2 but the Braves promptly gave the run back in the 8th when Phil Garner greeted Terry Forster with a leadoff double, then scored on Ashby's 2nd RBI single. The Braves had a great chance in the 8th when Dale Murphy led off with a walk, advanced to 3rd on a single by Bob Horner, who then took 2nd on a bases-loading walk by Chris Chambliss. Frank DiPino took over for Joe Niekro and got Jerry Royster to line to Enos Cabell at 1st and for good measure, got Bruce "Eggs" Benedict to lay one himself, grounding into an 6-4-3 rally-killing DP . The Braves could only muster a 1-out...

4/21/84: Pettis throws out 2 as Angels clip Blue Jays, 3-1

Gary Pettis threw out two potential runs at home which turned out to be the difference as the Halos beat the Blue Jays by a 3-1 final at Exhibition Stadium . In the Jays 4th, Lloyd Moseby led off with a single, stole 2nd and remained at 2nd with 2 outs when George Bell singled to center, Pettis threw a strike to Bob Boone that clipped Moseby at home. But Pettis wasn't done. Dave Collins doubled with 1 out and was headed for home on a Willie Upshaw single when Pettis threw another strike to Boone at home, gunning down Collins. Boone had the big hit of the game in the 5th when after a leadoff single by Bobby Grich and double by Ron Jackson , Boone singled them both in. Boone would figure prominently in the Halos insurance run in the 8th, when after a leadoff walk, he was sacrificed to 2nd by Dick Schofield and with 2 outs, scored on a "clutch" single by Rob Wilfong .  In the Jays 9th, Cliff Johnson led off with a double, scored on a Rance Mulliniks single, who wa...

4/21/84: Expos earn split with Cards, take G2, 5-2

While lacking the pomp and drama of game 1, game 2 was a game of redemption for the Expos , who bounced back from the bittersweet G1 loss for a 5-2 win over the Cards , securing a doubleheader split.  Pete Rose sat out game 2, still basking in the glory of 4000 and certainly cheering on Tim Wallach , who had the big hits in the nightcap, slugging a 2-run homer in the 3rd to give Le Expos a lead they would not relinquish. Wallach added 2 more in the 7th with a bases-loaded single for the final 5-2 score. David Palmer scattered 6 hits for the complete game win while Bob Forsch took the loss. OVERRIDING HISTORY: In the actual game which was rain-shortened, Palmer pitched a 5-inning no-hitter . MON 5-12-0 STL 2-6-0 WP-Palmer LP-Forsch HR-Wallach MON 6-9 STL 7-8

4/21/84: He got #4000, but...

It took 2 weeks later to get it in the C&D, but Pete Rose did join Ty Cobb as an exclusive member of the 4000 Club . He made it in the top of the 3rd off Card starter John Stuper, joining the "Georgia Peach" in baseball immortality. The milestone came in game 1 of a makeup doubleheader at Busch Stadium and you'd think Pete would be ecstatic about it in the postgame interview. Turns out though, it was very bittersweet. Bottom of the 8th, Expos lead 2-1 on a 2-run homer by Terry Francona in the 4th, Steve Rogers on the mound and Lonnie Smith leading off. Smith laced a pitch to left field, Rose, who has caught a billion of these things, somehow was thinking about the postgame celebration and... Dropped. The. Ball. E-7. 2. Base. Error. After Ken Oberkfell grounded to 2nd, Tom Herr lined a single to center that scored Smith with the tying run. Herr then stole 2nd, Steve Rogers gave way to Gary Lucas, who got George Hendrick on a popout to Gary Carter. PH David Green th...

4/21/84: The Price is right as Reds overwhelm puny Giants, 7-0

The Reds came on down and made the Giants overbid many times against Joe Price , limiting the pathetic, puny Giants to just 4 hits in a 7-0 whitewash on Contestants Row er, Candlestick Park . The Reds supported Price with a 14-hit attack paced by 3 hits each from Dan Driessen and Brad Gulden , chasing Bill Laskey , who pitched 3.2 innings. The Giant defense was a giant mess, committing 2 errors, plus a wild pitch from reliever Frank Williams . The game was so dispiriting, there were a few chants of "Fire Frank" as well as a rousing rendition of the 49ers fight song at the 7th inning stretch.  CIN 7-14-1 SFG 0-4-2 WP-Price LP-Laskey CIN 6-9 SFG 6-8   -"Fire Frank" as in Robinson .

4/21/84: Corcoran's PH single gives Phils 3-2 win over Mets

Tim Corcoran 's PH single and shutdown relief by Tug McGraw and Al Holland rallied the Phillies to a 3-2 nailbiter over the Mets in front of a thrilled crowd at " The Vet ." With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th and 2 outs, Von Hayes singled and advanced to 3rd on a single by Bo Diaz . Tim Corcoran then grabbed a bat for Ivan DeJesus and laced a Brent Gaff pitch up the middle for the eventual winning run. The Phillie bullpen shutdown the Mets with 1-2-3 relief by Tug McGraw in the 8th and for the save, a 1-2-3 inning by Al Holland in the 9th.  PHI 3-11-0 NYM 2-6-2 WP-McGraw LP-Gaff SV-Holland PHI 10-4 NYM 9-6

4/21/84: What's the "Mata?" Latest Yankee pickup, Griffey's 4 hits pace Yankees in 4-3 thriller

What was the matter with the Yankees against the Rangers? Don Mattingly 's 2 hits and nothing else. Now, what was the "Mata" in the rematch? Victor Mata , that's what, as he had an RBI double and sac fly, while old hand Ken Griffey went 4-4 as the Yankees hung on for a 4-3 win in the Bronx .  Mattingly did get 2 doubles to add to his increasing resume, while Yank starter Ray Fontenot cruised to a 4-0 lead through 5 until the Rangers rallied for 3 in the 6th on George Wright 's bomb to left. A 1st and 3rd Ranger rally forced Yogi Berra to bring on Jose Rijo with 1 out in the 7th, getting Wayne Tolleson on a pop to Rick Cerone and PH Bob Jones to strike out swinging. After Billy Sample lined to Andre Robertson at short to open the 8th, Yogi went for his ace Dave Righetti , who got the last 5 outs, including getting PH Dave Hostetler looking for out #27.  NYY 7-6 TEX 5-10 WP-Fontenot LP-Tanana SV-Righetti HR-Wright NYY 4-9-0 TEX 3-6-1
