PH Tim Corcoran singled home the go-ahead runs with 2 outs giving the Phils a 3-2 lead.  Holland couldn't hold it The Phils brought in ace reliever Al Holland to get the final 3 outs but only settled for 2 when PH Cesar Cedeno reached on a 2-out error by SS Ivan DeJesus. 4/6/84: Yount walks, Coop slams as Brewers sink M's in 11, 6-1

The Brewers and Mariners battled for 11 innings in an offensive struggle until the Brewers broke through with a 5-run 11th defeating the M's, 6-1. Both starting pitchers Moose Haas and Matt Young settled for a no-decision leaving this one in the hands of the bullpens. With Paul Mirabella pitching for Seattle, the Brews saw their opening starting with a lead-off walk by Jim Gantner. PH Bobby Clark singled Gantner to 2nd, setting up a bunt for PH Ed Romero, who laid one down to Ken Phelps at 1st, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. The Mariners then brought out the four fingers, meaning an intentional walk for Charlie Moore and a double play opportunity with Robin Yount at the plate. Mirabella walked Yount to bring home Jim Gantner with the go-ahead run, then with the bases reloaded with 1 out, Seattle changed pitchers, bringing in Edwin Nunez to pitch to Cecil Cooper. Cooper promptly Grand Slammed the door extending Milwaukee's lead to 6-1.  Rollie Fingers pitched a perfe...

4/6/84: Rickey, A's run roughshod over Red Sox, 10-1

See Rickey. See Rickey Run. Run, Rickey, Run. The Red Sox certainly had that variation of the Dick and Jane books on their minds after Henderson and his A's teammates beat up on the previously unbeaten Sawx, 10-1. Henderson reached base all 5 times he was up, going 2-for-3 with 2 walks, plus he was safe on an error by Sox catcher Gary Allenson. Henderson stole 3 bases and scored 3 times. The A's made mincemeat of Red Sox pitching, collecting 14 hits off 3 Sawx pitchers. including starter Oil Can Boyd who was battered around just like an "Oil Can" Every A's starter on offense got at least 1 hit, including 4 doubles and 1 triple, with Donnie Hill getting the triple and a double and Dave Kingman getting 2 doubles. The Red Sox managed some offense against A's starter and winner Lary Sorenson, collecting 7 hits including 3 from Jerry Remy and a late home run by Tony Armas to avert a Sorenson shutout. It was Armas' league-leading 3rd home run.  OAK 10-14-0 BOS 1...

4/6/84: Lynn takes the "Key", unlocks extra-inning win over Jays, 7-6

Freddie Lynn unlocked a tie with a game-winning homer against Jimmy Key as the Angels nipped the Blue Jays in an 11-inning thriller at the "Big A", 7-6. Luis Sanchez, who came on to relieve starter Jim Slaton in the 8th, got the win in relief, with Key taking the heartbreaking loss in relief of Doyle Alexander. The Angels carried a 6-4 lead into the 8th inning, but back-to-back home runs by Willie Upshaw and Cliff Johnson leading off the inning tied the score. Sanchez took over for Slaton after the Upshaw homer. The Angels had a chance to win in the 9th when Doug DeCinces and Lynn singled with 1 out, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Key then retired Bobby Grich on a fly to center and got PH Ron Jackson to pop to short. Luis Sanchez then got Alfredo Griffin to hit a foul pop to Daryl Sconiers at 1st and struck out Damaso Garcia a...

4/6/84: "Rags" to riches: Yanks hang on to defeat Rangers, 2-1

John Montefusco pitched 4.2 innings of hitless ball, setting the stage for Dave "Rags" Righetti's initial relief outing in the 1984 replay in a game which was won by the Yankees over the Texas Rangers by a 2-1 final score at Arlington Stadium. Both teams managed just 4 hits in this thriller, which was also peppered by shaky control by Texas starter Frank Tanana and sloppy fielding, especially by both starting second basemen. Pitching lines (starters) Montefusco, 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 K. Tanana 8.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 8 BB  Yanks struck first Omar Moreno led off the game with a walk, stole 2nd, then scored on Lou Pinella's RBI single. The score stood until the top of the 4th when Dave Winfield led off with a homer to left. Montefusco rolled right along through the Texas order, retiring the first 11 Rangers before George Wright reached on an error by Willie Randolph. Montefusco would later give up a 2-out single to Mickey Rivers in the 5th, ending the no-hit bid. In the ...

4/5/84: Royals (3-1) hold off Indians, 5-4

The Royals built a 5-1 lead behind 3 homers but held off a late Indians rally to score their 3rd victory in 4 games, 5-4. The score was tied at 1 in the bottom of the 3rd, when the Royals started launching off Indian starter Bert Blyeven, Jorge Orta slugging one into the right field stands to give them the 2-1 lead.  Going Bye-Bye The score stood at 2-1 until the bottom of the 6th, when Hal McRae led off with a single, then the front end of back-to-back volleys went Bye-Bye, as in Steve Balboni who sent one on the way to Omaha for a 4-1 lead. Then, Frank White unloaded another one off Blyeven stretching the lead to 5-1. Blyeven then went "Bye-Bye" as in "out of the game" when the bottom of the 7th began. Coming up short The Tribe had a couple of caught stealing's early in the game, with Brett Butler and Tony Bernazard just nipped out of a couple of sure steals. Their furious rally began in the top of the 8th, when Butler led off with a single. One out later, Jul...

4/5/84: Gross, Dempsey power Orioles past Twins, 5-2

Wayne Gross and Rick Dempsey supplied the power, while Cal Ripken Jr. supplied the defense as the Orioles flew past the Twins, 5-2 in a series opener at the Metrodome.  The Birds struck first in the top of the 2nd as veteran DH Ken Singleton singled with 1 out. Third sacker Wayne Gross wasted no time cashing that one in, powering a homer to the Baggie in right. 2-0, Orioles. It would stay 2-0 until the 7th when John Lowenstein led off the inning hitting a dribbler which catcher Tim Laudner would himself dribble, Lowenstein safe at 1st on the E-2. Ken Singleton then singled Lowenstein to 2nd, putting 2 on with nobody out. Twins starter Mike Smithson settled down, striking out Gross and getting Rich Dauer to line to Gary Gaetti at 3rd. Rick Dempsey would provide the knockout punch, hitting a bomb to left extending the Orioles lead to 5-0.  Boddicker started, Stewart finished   Mike Boddicker started for Baltimore and kept the Twins pretty much in check, limiting them to 6 h...

4/5/84: Tram and Gibby drive in 5 as Tigers destroy White Sox, 12-3

It all started on a "Sweet" note when Lou Whitaker opened the game with a homer off Richard Dotson. Then, a couple of guys named Tram and Gibby set off their own fireworks at Comiskey Park, each slugging a pair of 3-run homers with Gibson also hitting a solo number.  The final damages, Alan Trammell, 4-for-5, homer, 2 doubles, 5 RBI, 3 runs scored. Kirk Gibson, 2 homers, single, 5 RBI, 2 runs scored. Milt Wilcox went the distance, though the Sox made it respectable with 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th. Carlton Fisk gave the shellshocked Sox their lone highlight with a solo homer off Wilcox in the 3rd, tying the score at 1. Kirk Gibson broke the tie with a solo homer in the 4th, then Tram and Gibby picked the Sox...

4/4/84: The Cubs left something in San Francisco in the bottom of the 8th

The Chicago Cubs left something in San Francisco in the bottom of the 8th inning, that something was their bullpen. Given a 6-4 lead coming into the bottom of the 8th, Lee Smith tried to do everything humanly possible to earn a 2-inning save, Smith did just the opposite, facing 6 batters without an out as the Giants stunned the Cubbies, 9-6. No insurance in 8th, then no bullpen The Cubs took a 6-4 lead into the top of the 8th with every intention of picking up an insurance run, PH Keith Moreland doubled with 1 out, then advanced to 3rd on a line single by Jody Davis. PH Henry Cotto bounced to 3rd with the infield in, eliminating Moreland at 3rd, then after Tom Veryzer was HBP, Bob Dernier bounced to 3rd, ending the inning. Lee Smith came on to try to secure the save and the win for Chuck Rainey, but nothing went right. Joel Youngblood singled to lead off the inning, then Chili Davis walked. Bob Brenly doubled to center, scoring Youngblood and advancing Chili to 3rd. Gene Richards then ...

4/4/84: The "Moose" was on the loose, Cards helpless to stop

The "Moose" is not necessarily a species that is native to Southern California, as a matter of fact, there is one known species that roams around the LA neighborhood known as Chavez Ravine. Make no "Moose"-take about it, this encounter gave the St. Louis Cardinals nightmares on their flight to San Francisco after dropping a 6-3 decision to the Dodgers and their rare breed of "Moose," Mike Marshall. On the prowl in the 1st Steve Sax led off the Dodgers half of the 1st with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Terry Whitfield. After Ken Landreaux flied to center and Pedro Guerrero struck out, the "Moose" took dead aim at a Bob Forsch fastball and deposited it into the left field bleachers for the first of what would be 2 home runs for Marshall on the night. The 2nd came in the fifth, again off Forsch and this time with Guerrero on 1st. Whitey Herzog took a frightened Forsch out of the game after the 2nd bomb. Said Forsch after the ...

4/4/84: Padres shut out the Pirates in "3-G", 3-0

The San Diego Padres introduced a new way to win a ball game on Thursday afternoon, it's called "3-G." Gwynn, Garvey and Gossage. Gwynn strikes first After 2/1-2 scoreless innings, the Padres struck first on a double by Garry Templeton. After starting pitcher Andy Hawkins bounced to 2nd and Alan Wiggins flied to center, it was All-World right fielder Tony Gwynn smacking a triple to center field, scoring Templeton. After Graig Nettles walked, it would be the 2nd component in the "3-G" getting the job done as Steve Garvey scored Gwynn with a single, Nettles to 3rd and scoring on a subsequent single by Terry Kennedy for a 3-0 Pads lead over the Pirates after 3. Garvey would also dazzle with his glove, killing 2 Pirate rallies with double plays. It would be a matter of time before that 3rd "G" component would make his presence felt.  "GOOSE! GOOSE!" The calls started in the 6th with the Pirates putting runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 out and Andy H...

4/4/84: Beattie pitches beauty, Phelps makes a couple self-destruct in M's 8-3 win over Jays

Mariner righty Jim Beattie overcame a 2-run Blue Jay 4th, while Ken Phelps self-destructed a couple of long home runs as the Mariners split their 2-game set with Toronto to the tune of an 8-3 victory at the Kingdome. The Jays jumped out to a 1-0 lead on singles by Damaso Garcia and Rance Mulliniks which put runners at the corners with nobody out. Lloyd Moseby bounced home the run on a 4-6-3 DP by Jack Perconte. Before Phelps, it was Putnam The M's wasted no time against Jay starter Luis Leal, getting a lead-off single by Perconte and after a fly to right by Barry Bonnell, Gorman Thomas singled Perconte to 2nd. Pat Putnam then deposited a Leal fastball into the right field bleachers for a 3-run homer. The Jays got to Beattie for 2 in the 4th on a lead-off double by Lloyd Moseby and single by Willie Upshaw. Cliff Johnson then hit a fly to center scoring Moseby, followed by a single by George Bell, sending Upshaw to 3rd. Upshaw scored on a sac fly by Jesse Barfield, tying the score at...

4/4/84: Red Sox give Angels a 21-hit salute, 13-4

The California Angels were looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Red Sox, so they jumped off to a 3-0 lead off of Dennis Eckersley. Unfortunately, they still had 8 innings to play.  Rough night for Romanick  Angel righty Ron Romanick pitched a scoreless 1st, then the roof caved in, Sawx scoring 3 in the 2nd to tie, 1 in the 3rd to take the lead, then a decisive 4th inning crushed the Halos.  The Sox sent 12 in the 4th, chasing Romanick with 7 runs on 8 hits for a 11-3 lead, going on to destroy the Halos by a 13-4 margin on 21 hits.  Balanced attack, Eckersley the key Every Sox batter had at least 1 hit, with a balanced attack leading the way. Jerry Remy, Wade Boggs, Jim Rice, Tony Armas, Dave Stapleton all had 3 hits with Remy getting a triple and Boggs hitting a homer. The Sox also had 4 doubles, with Glenn Hoffman getting 2 in the 7-run 4th. Eckersley pitched 7 strong innings, limiting the punchless Halos to 6 hits, including a solo homer from former Sox MVP...

4/4/84: Massacre at Fort Arlington

Dave Stewart fell victim to bases-loaded hitter extraordinaire Pat Tabler as the Indian 1B clubbed a grand slam in the 2nd inning of an Indian massacre of the Texas Rangers, 15-3. Tabler also slugged a 2-run single with the sacks full in the 7th, giving him 6 RBIs on the night.   Stewart's line  The Ranger righty struggled badly, giving up 9 runs in 2.1 innings, allowing 9 ER on 6 hits, striking out 5, walking 5. He also walked 3.  2 big innings The Tribe sent 11 to the plate in the 2nd, scoring 8 runs, including Tabler's slam, while in the 7th, they sent 10, scoring 5, including Tabler's 2-run single. Yankees-Royals: Who's Hot/Not?

Just finished Yankee-Royals 3-game opening series. As the headline implies, here's who rose to the occasion and who just plain sank (or stank).  It's not May yet Dave Winfield went 7-for-10 against KC including a 4-for-4 effort in the middle game of the series. It may have seemed like "May" in some way, as all 7 hits were singles. Who needs George? The Yankees do... oh, wrong team. This George (Brett) is sitting out because of injury, but long-time teammate Hal McRae is picking up the slack, going 8-for-10, which has also been all singles, but that's just an indication that McRae is not slowing down. Of those 8 hits, 2 games have been 3 hit performances coming in both Royal wins against the Bombers. Funny I should mention "Bombers" Through 3 games, the Yanks have yet to yank one out of the park, which is fitting since Royals Stadium is for line-drive hitters (1-2 ballpark effects for HR's). On the other hand, Pat Sheridan and Greg Pryor did manage ...

4/4/84: Royals outslug Yankees in rubber game, 11-7

The Royals took advantage of a wild Shane Rawley and posted an 11-7 win over the Yankees in the rubber game of their opening series at Kansas City. Rawley allowed 6 runs in 3 innings, walking 5, allowing a wild pitch and committing an error.  Pat Sheridan and Onix Concepion drove in all 4 KC runs in the 2nd on back-to-back hits, a double and single respectively.  Gura wild too, then Saberhagen took charge Royals starter Larry Gura had his own share of wildness, walking 4 in 5+IP, then after the Yankees took a 7-6 lead, Bret Saberhagen took charge and with late inning help from Mark Huismann and Dan Quisenberry, got the "W" in relief. The Royals then rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th off Bob Shirley and Jay Howell to rally Saberhagen, with Ken Griffey's error on a Frank White grounder scoring the go-ahead run. Pat Sheridan was the more prolific of the KC hitters this night with 2 singles and for good measure, a solo homer in the bottom of the 8th,  KCR 11-11-0 NY...

4/4/84: Tigers are human after all, Twins pull off stunning win, 6-4

On paper, the 84 Tigers are one of the best teams of all-time. On C&D, they're only human. The Minnesota Twins saw to that, jumping off to a 6-1 lead against 18-game winner Dan Petry, then hanging on behind the pitching of Frank Viola and a key DP in the 7th to hand the Tigs their 1st loss of the 84 replay 6-4.  Petry pummeled Scoreless heading into the bottom of the 2nd, the Twins got 3 runs off Petry, sending the maximum of 9 beginning with a single by Mickey Hatcher. After Gary Gaetti struck out, Tim Laudner walked, then Len Faedo singled, scoring Hatcher. Jim Eisenreich walked to load the bases, then Tim Teufel singled home Laudner with the 2nd run, reloading the bases. Kent Hrbek made it 3-0 with a sac fly, then after Tom Brunansky reloaded the bases with a line single to short, Randy Bush tapped to Petry to end the 2nd. An Alan Trammell sac fly scored Tom Brookens with the first Tiger run in the 3rd, then in the bottom half, Mickey Hatcher led off with a home run extendin...

4/4/84: "Hawk" soars in the 11th as Expos beat Astros, 5-2

With the score tied 2-2 in the 8th, Andre Dawson hit a fly ball to Terry Puhl in right with 1 out. Bryan Little was aboard at 3rd after reaching on a lead-off double and moving to 3rd on a Tim Raines bouncer to 1st. Little tagged up, but Puhl threw a dart to home, tagging out Little and leaving Dawson fuming as he headed back to the dugout. The 9-2 double play kept the score tied at 2, setting up another chance for the "Hawk" in the 11th inning.  No decision for Ryan   Nolan Ryan's 1st start of the season ended in a 9-inning no-decision, striking out 7, including Tim Wallach 3 times. Bill Gullickson also settled for a no-decision, setting up extras. After Bryan Little grounded to 2nd to open the 11th inning, Tim Raines singled, then stepped up the "Hawk", who made sure there would not be a repeat of what happened in the 8th by powering a fly ball over Terry Mumphrey's head in center, Raines chugged home from 1st and Andre Dawson's soaring double gave the...

4/4/84: Mets run Reds out of Riverfront; Hernandez goes 4-5 in 5-3 win

The Mets gameplan this night was simple, get on base, let Keith Hernandez hit the ball, then just plain run the Reds out of their ballpark. The strategy worked. 5 stolen bases and a 4-hit night for their MVP 1B paced the Mets to their first win of 84, 5-3.  Run, Mets, Run The Mets scored 3 in the 2nd behind their run first, ask questions later attack getting RBI doubles from Danny Heep and Ron Darling and an RBI single from Wally Backman, who stole the first of his 2 bases in the 2nd. Backman would steal again in the 9th, leading to a Mets insurance run-scoring single by Ron Gardenhire, who also joined in on the stealing frenzy in the 7th, which was cashed in on Keith Hernandez's 4th hit of the night, a single. He also had a double in the 1st.  Darling, bullpen, defense do the job The Mets also got stolen bases from Danny Heep and Darryl Strawberry but needed solid pitching to secure their first win and got it from righty Ron Darling, who scattered 6 hits and 3 runs in ...

4/4/84: Matuszek, Schmidt 9th inning heroics make Braves reliever a "dead mon"

The speed of Len Matuszek and the clutch hitting of Mike Schmidt combined to make a loser of Braves reliever Jeff Dedmon in the 9th at Fulton County Stadium, giving the "Fighting Phils" a thrilling 3-2 win over the Braves. Matuszek led off the inning with a single, then thanks to a good lead, took off and stole 2nd, setting up Schmidt's single up the middle, scoring Matuszek with the go-ahead and eventual winning run. The Phils called upon lefty Al Holland to shut down the Braves, retiring Bob Horner, PH Randy Johnson and Glenn Hubbard successively, making a winner out of Bill Campbell. Dedmon ended up being a "Dead mon," taking the loss.  Earlier... The Phils rode the long ball to early success, getting a solo homer from Matuszek in the 1st and another from Joe Lefebvre in the 3rd, both homers off starter Craig McMurtry, who otherwise struggled with his control, walking 6 in 6 innings. Phils starter John Denny allowed nary a hit through the first 5.1 innings, b...

4/4/84: Ojeda matches Witt in strikeouts, gets help from the longball in 2-0 3-hitter

Boston Lefty Bob Ojeda scattered 3 hits while matching Mike Witt with 10 strikeouts. The difference? Witt didn't strike out Rich Gedman and Tony Armas. The 2 Sawx sluggers hit solo longballs as the Sox scored a 2-0 win in the Big "A" in a dandy of a ball game. Gedman's homer came with 1 out in the 5th, while Armas hit his 2nd in as many games, also with 1 out, this time in the 7th.  Color Grich, Pettis frustrated Bobby Grich came close to a ballpark homer in the 7th which would've tied it, but it died on the warning track. Gary Pettis was even more frustrated, striking all 3 times he was up-all looking.  Home run trends The Sawx have 5 homers in 2 games, all solo shots. Tony Armas leads the way with 2, followed by Mike Easler, Dwight Evans and Gedman. Armas is also tied with Detroit's Darrell Evans for the early league lead with 2 dingers. 4/4/84: Moore, Caldwell, Yount pace Brewers past A's, 8-4

Charlie Moore's 3-run homer, Robin Yount's 3-4 night and solid pitching by Mike Caldwell paced the Brewers to their 1st win of the season, an 8-4 affair over a stubborn bunch of A's, who were paced by Rickey Henderson's 2 singles, 2 walks and a stolen base. Moore's homer was the key   Score tied at 2 in the top of the 4th, the Brewers managed to get A's starter Tim Conroy out of the game with a one-out double by Jim Sundberg, who was promptly scored on a triple by Jim Gantner. After Rick Manning was caught looking, Randy Ready drew a walk, then Charlie Moore unloaded a 3-run homer to left, which turned out to be the big key in the game and the end of the night for the lefty Conroy.   Caldwell fights errors, bullpen finishes up Mike Caldwell shook off a couple of 2-base errors by Robin Yount and Ben Oglivie, which got the A's to within 2 at 6-4, but the big key came with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th with 1 out when Caldwell induced a Dwayne Murph...

The M's took the lead in the bottom of the 5th on a leadoff walk by Jack Perconte and 2-run homer by Barry Bonnell, his 3rd of 4 hits, tying the score. Pat Putnam singled with 1 out, advanced to 3rd on a single by Cowens, then scoring on Dave Henderson's RBI single giving...
