4/4/84: Tigers are human after all, Twins pull off stunning win, 6-4

On paper, the 84 Tigers are one of the best teams of all-time. On C&D, they're only human. The Minnesota Twins saw to that, jumping off to a 6-1 lead against 18-game winner Dan Petry, then hanging on behind the pitching of Frank Viola and a key DP in the 7th to hand the Tigs their 1st loss of the 84 replay 6-4.

Petry pummeled

Scoreless heading into the bottom of the 2nd, the Twins got 3 runs off Petry, sending the maximum of 9 beginning with a single by Mickey Hatcher. After Gary Gaetti struck out, Tim Laudner walked, then Len Faedo singled, scoring Hatcher. Jim Eisenreich walked to load the bases, then Tim Teufel singled home Laudner with the 2nd run, reloading the bases. Kent Hrbek made it 3-0 with a sac fly, then after Tom Brunansky reloaded the bases with a line single to short, Randy Bush tapped to Petry to end the 2nd. An Alan Trammell sac fly scored Tom Brookens with the first Tiger run in the 3rd, then in the bottom half, Mickey Hatcher led off with a home run extending the lead back to 3. The bottom of the 4th would mark Petry's exit as Bush and Hatcher singled with 2 outs, followed by a walk to Gary Gaetti. Tim Laudner completed the pummeling of Petry with a 2-run single making the score 6-1 after 4.

Tigers rally, but

Lance Parrish's 2-out homer in the top of the 6th off Frank Viola cut the lead to 6-2. Then in the 7th, Barbero Garbey and Chet Lemon led off with back-to-back singles, Garbey then scoring on a double by Kirk Gibson. After Tom Brookens was caught looking, Lou Whitaker walked to load the bases, then Alan Trammell cut the lead to 6-4 with a line RBI single. Viola was certainly on the ropes. Then Darrell Evans hit a grounder to Len Faedo, who turned it into a 6-4-3 DP, ending the inning. Viola would retire the last 6, securing the Twins 6-4 triumph. Viola struck out 9, including inducing the "Golden Sombrero" (4 K's) on Larry Herndon.
