San Diego jumped off to a 6-0 lead after 2 innings but fought off a furious Cub rally to hand Chicago their 3rd straight loss, 7-6. The Pads got a first inning run on a single and steal by Tony Gwynn, who later scored on an RBI single by Steve Garvey. The Gwynn-Garvey combo struck again in a 5-run second inning, with Gwynn driving in Kevin McReynolds and Tim Lollar, who had doubled in Carmelo Martinez with a run earlier in the inning, Alan Wiggins, who had walked, advanced to 3rd. Gwynn stole 2nd again and later scored along with Wiggins on Steve Garvey's 2nd single of the game. Cub starter Scott Sanderson was then relieved by Dickie Noles.
The score was 7-1 Padres in the 7th when the Cubs made their furious comeback, starting with an HBP of Bill Buckner by Tim Lollar. With 2 outs, Gary Woods singled Buckner to 3rd, Buckner then scoring on an error by Graig Nettles. Gary Matthews then singled to load the bases, then Roy Cey turned a Lollar mistake into a Grand Slam, cutting the SD lead to 7-6. Lollar was then replaced by Craig Lefferts, who would give way to Goose Gossage in the 8th, who shot down a 2nd/3rd rally with 1 out in the inning and save for a 2-out error by Alan Wiggins in the 9th, saved the win for Lollar.
