4/7/84: Balanced attack rallies Cards past Giants, 5-1
The Cardinals relied on balanced hitting to down the Giants at Candlestick Park, with 7 different Cards getting a hit in a 5-1 win.
After the Giants grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI single by Chili Davis scoring Manny Trillo, the Cards went to work. With 1 out in the top of the 2nd, Andy Van Slyke doubled, he scored one out later on a triple by Ozzie Smith, who then scored on a single by starting pitcher Dave LaPoint. Giant starter Jeff Robinson retired 12 Cards in a row at one point before David Green snapped the string with a deep fly to the left field cheap seats, making it 3-1 after 5-1/2.
The Cards put it away with 2 more runs in the 8th off Robinson and reliever Frank Williams, starting with a 1-out single by Lonnie Smith. Smith then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd when Ken Oberkfell barely beat out an infield single to Bob Brenly at 1st. With the infield in DP depth, Tom Herr slow rolled one to 2nd, scoring Smith and advancing Obie to 2nd. David Green then reached on an error by Brenly leading to his and Robinson's departure from the game via double-switch. Willie McGee's infield single to short plated Obie with the game's final run. After Dave LaPoint walked Scot Thompson and Jack Clark (Clark's 4th walk), Bruce Sutter came on to get the final four outs, completing a combined 5-hitter.
