4/7/84: Samuel runs, runs, runs over the Reds in 11, 10-7

Juan Samuel ran, ran, ran his way past Cincinnati, heck you can say he ran through the tri-state area as the Phils outlasted the Reds in 11 innings, 10-7. Samuel went 4-6 with 2 doubles, a triple and single plus 3 stolen bases, including 2 daring steals of 3rd. His 4th hit of the game, a lead-off single in the 11th was followed by his 3rd steal of the game. After Len Matuszek flied to center and Mike Schmidt struck out for the 3rd time, Joe Lefebvre doubled home Samuel with the go-ahead run and 2 insurance runs and a 1-2-3 bottom of the 11th, the Phillie win streak went to three, while the Reds losing streak also hit 3.

Just as the Phils ran their way past Cincy, Cincy ran their way out of the ball game with a couple of throw-outs at home. The first, with the score tied at 7 in the bottom of the 8th came when Gary Redus doubled with Ron Oester at 1st with 2 outs, CF Von Hayes threw a strike that nailed the "Blender" at home, ending the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Dave Concepion led off with a walk. After Dan Driessen grounded to 1st, Dave Parker was intentionally walked, setting it up for PH Wayne Krenchicki, who singled to right where Joe Lefebvre uncorked a laser, gunning down Concepion at home.

One earlier Phillie run scored courtesy of Cesar Cedeno, who made not one, but two errors opening the 3rd inning allowing Len Matuszek to reach 2nd and then to score when Mike Schmidt's fly ball also dropped out of Cedeno's glove. The 4th Phillie reliever, Larry Andersen got the win, while Tom Hume, the 5th Red hurler took the loss.
