4/7/84: Thompson thunders early, but Marshall supplies late lightning as Dodgers rally past Pirates

Pirates' slugger Jason Thompson picked up where he left off in the previous game, supplying early thunder with 2 home runs, 5RBI in his 1st 2 at-bats, but the Dodgers struck for late lightning courtesy of Mike Marshall's 3-run homer off Don Robinson in the bottom of the 7th, giving the boys in Blue an 8-5 victory at the "Ravine."

Thompson struck 1st in the 1st with Marvell Wynne at 2nd, his 2nd homer in as many at-bats dating to the previous game, when his 3-run blast off Tom Niedenfuer rallied the Pirates to a late win. The Dodgers answered Thompson in the home half of the 1st, when after Steve Sax reached on a lead-off error by Johnny Ray, Pedro Guerrero crushed a 2-run blast off John Candelaria tied the score at 2. It didn't take Thompson long to strike again off Dodger starter Alejandro Pena when in the 3rd inning after 2 out, Ray walked, Bill Madlock singled and Thompson crushed a 3-run shot giving the Bucs a 5-2 lead. Thompson over his last 3 at-bats had 3 home runs with a league-leading 8 RBI.

But the Dodgers would top Thompson's thunder with some late lightning, starting in the home 5th when Steve Sax doubled to right with 1 out and Dave Anderson drew a walk. Candy Maldonado singled home Sax, making the score 5-3. One inning later, Mike Marshall led off with a single, then promptly went home on Steve Yeager's 1st home run, tying the score at 5. In the Dodger 7th, Anderson walked with 1 out, followed by Candy Maldonado's single, forcing Chuck Tanner to swap Candelaria for righty Don Robinson with Pedro Guerrero on-deck. Robinson got Pedro looking, but when Mike Marshall stepped up to the plate with 2 out, Robinson could only stand and watch as Marshall slugged his 3rd homer of the season, giving the Dodgers the lead and eventual win. Pena went the distance, striking out 8 Bucs and retiring 12 in a row at one point with the not-so-sweet loss going to the "Candy Man."
