4/10/84: BS for the BoSox as Cowens strikes again in the pinch

No doubt there were a few BoSox fans yelling "BS" at their radio/TV on this night, as John Henry Johnson recorded a blown save, allowing Mariners slugger Al Cowens to come through in the pinch at the Kingdome in a come-from-behind 4-3 win which ruined a gem for Sox lefty Bob Ojeda who had a 1-hitter through 7 which thanks to the leaky Sox pen, was charged with a frustrating loss.

After 2 scoreless innings, the Sox struck 1st on a 2-out triple by Jerry Remy which was promptly cashed in by Dwight Evans' single. Evans then scored from 1st on a double by Wade Boggs, who got as far as 3rd on a single by Jim Rice before Mike Easler hit a force to short, ending the top of the 3rd inning. That's how it stood until the top of the 8th when Tony Armas slugged his 4th homer of the season, extending the lead to a comfortable 3-0. Then, the wheels fell off.

Bob Ojeda allowed just one hit through 7 innings, striking out 6 Mariners. It all began innocently enough in the bottom of the 8th when Dave Henderson drew a leadoff walk, then daringly stole 2nd. That strategy would pay off after Bob Kearney flied to right, setting up Phil Bradley, who doubled one over Jim Rice's head in left, scoring Hendu with the first Seattle run. Spike Owen then singled home Bradley, cutting the Sox lead to 3-2, before Ojeda retired Jack Perconte on a foul pop to 1st and Larry Milbourne to fly to right.

After a scoreless BoSox 9th, the home half started with Barry Bonnell bouncing one to 1st. Then pinch-hitter Domingo Ramos singled and Steve Henderson singled Ramos to 2nd. The call came for lefty John Henry Johnson to save it for Ojeda, which would backfire on a walk to Hendu to load the bases, setting up PH Al Cowens, coming off a 2-homer/7 RBI game against Milwaukee. Cowens' magic bat stroked a double to center, scoring Ramos and S. Henderson, giving the BoSox a very bad case of "BS" before bedtime.
