4/11/84: ChiSox rally in 8th to beat Tribe, 7-4

The White Sox rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th to beat the Tribe by a final score of 7-4 for their 2nd win of the season.

The Indians struck 1st in the top of the 1st on a lead-off walk by Brett Butler, who then stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a single by Tony Bernazard. Butler scored on a sac fly by Julio Franco. The ChiSox tied it in the bottom of the 2nd on a leadoff homer by Ron Kittle, his second of the season. The score remained tied until the top of the 4th when the Indians came out running again on a leadoff walk by Julio Franco. Franco stole 2nd, then advanced to 3rd on fly to center by Broderick Perkins, eventually scoring on a single by Brook Jacoby. Jacoby took off and stole 2nd, then scored on a 2-out single by Mike Hargrove, making the score 3-1 after 3-1/2.

The Sox pulled to within 3-2 when Greg Walker led off the bottom of the 4th with a solo homer but fell 2 runs behind again in the top of the 5th when Butler tripled with 1 out and scored when Vance Law misplayed Tony Bernazard's bouncer to 3rd. That's where the score stood until the bottom of the 7th when catcher Marc Hill doubled with 2 out and scored on Julio Cruz's triple cutting the score to 4-3.

Tribe starter Bert Blyeven carried the 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 8th, when the Sox began their decisive uprising, beginning with back-to-back singles by Scott Fletcher and Harold Baines putting Sox on the corners with nobody out. Ernie Camacho took over for Blyeven and gave up a game-tying double by Greg Walker, scoring Fletcher and advancing Baines to 3rd.  That's when Ron Kittle hit a fly ball to center which Brett Butler brutally botched, scoring both Baines and Walker, making the score 6-4. After PH Mike Squires singled Kittle to 3rd, Vance Law scored Kittle with a single for the 4th run of the inning, all with nobody out. Camacho regrouped and got Marc Hill to bounce into a 6-4-3 DP, then fielded a Julio Cruz comebacker to end the inning.

Sox starter Richard Dotson retired 8 in a row at one point and got Brook Jacoby to bounce to short and struck out Jerry Willard to open the 9th. After Mike Hargrove singled to right, George Vukovich struck out to end the game. The win was the 2nd for the Pale Hose in 6 games; the loss leveled the Indian record to 3-3.
