4/11/84: Expos hang on to beat Reds behind Bryn Smith, 4-3

The Expos used balanced hitting and the right arm of Bryn Smith to hold off one last-minute "Cobra" sting in a 4-3 triumph at Riverfront Stadium.

The Reds struck first in the bottom of the 2nd on a 2-out solo homer by Ron Oester. It didn't take the Expos long to match that as Bryan Little led off the top of the 3rd with a double, then scored on Tim Raines' RBI single. The score remained tied at 1 in the 5th when with 2 outs, Raines singled, stole second and scored on a double by Andre Dawson. Raines would again figure prominently in the Expos next run in the 7th when he drew a one-out walk, stole 2nd and scored on Gary Carter's RBI single, making the score 3-1.

Bryn Smith held the Reds to 2 hits through 7 innings and was working on a string of 11 straight retired Reds when catcher Brad Gulden led off the bottom of the 8th with a single. Ron Oester slow-rolled Gulden to 2nd but the rally fizzled on a Tom Foley fly to right and Dave Concepion pop to short.

The Expos got some insurance in the 9th when Andre Dawson singled with 1 out and stole second. Gary Carter doubled in Dawson to make it 4-1. Turns out, that insurance run was what the Expos needed as in the bottom of the 9th after a 1-out walk to Duane Walker and a strikeout of Tony Perez, Dave "Cobra" Parker struck one over the right field fence, cutting the Reds deficit to 1 run. PH Dan Driessen flied out to center, leaving the Reds that one run short. Smith went the distance, scattering 4 hits, striking out 8. Bruce Berenyi took the loss for the Reds, who dropped to 2-6. The Expos are 4-4.
