4/8/84: Met rally comes up short, Astros hang on, 7-4
After the Mets grabbed an early 1-0 lead, the Astros erupted for 5 1st inning runs against shaky Met starter Mike Torrez, then hung for a 7-4 win at the Astrodome, snapping their own three-game losing streak and the three-game winning streak of the Mets. The 'stros got RBI singles from Dickie Thon*, Jose Cruz, Jerry Mumphrey and Joe Niekro, plus 1 from a Ray Knight DP to short, which yielded no RBI. Mumphrey went 4-for-5 with a double and 3 RBIs to pace Houston.
The Mets would rally back against Niekro and the Astros pen, getting a solo homer from Darryl Strawberry in the 4th and 2 runs in the 7th, cutting the deficit to 7-4. In the 9th, Wally Backman singled with 1 out, then Jose Oquendo slow-rolled a grounder to 2nd, moving Backman in scoring position with 2 outs. Astro reliever Dave Smith then walked Keith Hernandez and hit George Foster with a pitch to load the bases, setting up Strawberry with the bases loaded and forcing the 'stros to sub righty Smith for lefty reliever Frank DIPino for a lefty-lefty showdown. The move worked as Strawberry flew to Mumphrey in center, ending the game.
