4/8/84: Pedro's Punch knocks out Pirates, 5-3

Pedro Guerrero's 2-run homer in the 7th off Rick Rhoden rallied the Dodgers to a 5-3 win over the Pirates, giving the Dodgers a 4-1 record in the early going of the 1984 campaign. Guerrero's blast came with 2 outs and Ken Landreaux on base and gave Dodger Blue a lead they would not relinquish.

The Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 2-1/2 innings behind Lee Lacy's RBI double in the 1st and a 3rd inning sac fly from Marvell Wynne who drove in Rick Rhoden, who had led off the inning with a triple. The Dodgers got on the board in the bottom of the 5th on back-to-back doubles by Steve Sax and Terry Whitfield, then tied the score in the 6th on a 2-out single by Dave Anderson and double by Mike Scioscia.

The Pirates regained the lead in the 7th on a one-out single by Dale Berra, who advanced to 3rd on a 2-out single by Marvell Wynne. Lee Lacy tied it with a single but was caught stealing to end the inning. Guerrero's go-ahead homer in the 7th was his second of the season and was followed by some insurance in the 8th, a lead-off double by Greg Brock and RBI single by Dave Anderson.

Pinch-hitter Jim Morrison tried to "light a fire" with a lead-off walk off Fernando Valenzuela in the 9th, but the fire was quickly put out on Dale Berra's 6-4-3 DP. Tony Pena did get a PH single, but Marvell Wynne's fly to right secured Valenzuela's 2nd win in as many starts. Rick Rhoden walked the plank in defeat.
