4/11/84: Cubs "Bull" their way past Dodgers, 5-3

The Cubs get an 8th inning solo homer from Leon "Bull" Durham and went on to beat the Dodgers by a final of 5-to-3 at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday Night.

Both teams matched solo runs in the 1st, remaining tied at 1 until the bottom of the 6th when Pedro Guerrero hit a solo homer off Scott Sanderson for a 2-1 lead. The Cubs took the lead with 2 in the 7th on a lead-off error by Guerrero, Larry Bowa reaching. Sanderson beat out a bunt single putting runners on 1st and 2nd, Bowa scoring the tying run on a single by Ryne Sandberg, while Sanderson scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice by Gary Matthews.

Rick Monday led off the Dodger 7th with a single to center but was forced out on a Steve Sax bouncer to 3rd. Terry Whitfield flied to left, Sax tagging up to go to 2nd and scoring on Ken Landreaux's double, tying the score at 3. 

After Ken Howell struck out Keith Moreland and Jody Davis to open the 8th, Leon Durham hit the "Bull" out of a Howell fastball well over the right field fence, giving the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Keith Moreland cashed in an insurance policy single scoring Ryne Sandberg in the 9th for the final margin. The Cubbie bullpen of Tim Stoddard and Lee Smith finished off the Dodgers to secure the win, The Dodgers had a 3-game winning streak snapped, dropping their record to 5-2.
