4/11/84: Pena "rings" up Lerch in 13th, Bucs outlast Giants, 8-7
Tony Pena "rang up" Randy "Lerch" in the top of the 13th for a leadoff homer as the Pirates outlasted the Giants in a getaway day marathon at the "Stick", 8-7.
The Bucs jumped out to a 3-0 lead before a single out was recorded as Marvell Wynne hit a leadoff double to center, Johnnie Ray singled home Wynne, Lee Mazzilli doubled Ray to 3rd, Jason Thompson doubled home both Ray and Mazzilli. Giant starter Bill Laskey settled down long enough for the Giants to rally for 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd on 4 singles, a sac fly and an error off Pirate lefty John Tudor.
The Bucs regained the lead with 2 runs in the 4th on a walk by Jim Morrison, single by John Tudor and a walk by Marvell Wynne. Johnnie Ray singled home Morrison and Tudor, but Wynne was thrown out at 3rd by Jeffrey Leonard, ending the inning. The Pirates added a 6th run in the 7th on a triple by Wynne and single by Ray, his 4th RBI.
The Giants rallied for 3 in the 8th on a leadoff double by Steve Nicosia, PH single by Al Oliver, RBI single by Johnnie LeMaster, RBI single by Manny Trillo and a go-ahead SF by Jack Clark. The Pirates would tie it up in the 9th off Gary Lavelle on a single by PH Lee Lacy, steal of 2nd and RBI single by Wynne. Wynne was caught stealing, Ray singled for his 4th hit of the game, the inning ending on PH Brian Harper's force to short.
The score remained tied until the 13th when Pena hit his leadoff homer off Lerch. RP Lee Tunnell got Jack Clark and Jeffrey Leonard to line to Ron Wotus at short, Chili Davis doubled with 2 out and Fran Mullins lined to Wotus again ending the marathon game. Cecilio Guante got the win in relief, the save going to Tunnell. Randy "Lerch" got "rung up" for the loss.
NOTES: There was a total 113 plate appearances and 105 at-bats in the game. Kent Tekulve entered the game in the 8th for starter John Tudor and blew the save. Gary Lavelle pitched the 9th and blew the save for the Giants. He was followed by Greg Minton, then Lerch. After the Pirates used up available pinch-hitters, pitcher Rick Rhoden was inserted as a PH. He grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 DP.
