4/12/84: Padres remove the "goo," walk-off Braves, 3-2

The struggling bats of the San Diego Padres weren't struggling in the bottom of the 9th, they found their solution, a tub of "goo." The Padres rallied to score 2 runs off Terry Forster in the bottom of the 9th, shocking the Braves by a 3-2 score.

Forster relieved Rick Camp in the bottom of the 9th with the score 2-1 in favor of Atlanta, when the punchless Pads suddenly weren't so "punchless." Luis Salazar, pinch-hitting for Graig Nettles, beat out an infield single hit to Bob Horner at 3rd to start the rally. Steve Garvey, full of clutch hitting in key situations, singled Salazar to 3rd, which set up the inevitable ending. Terry Kennedy singled home Salazar with the tying run, then Carmelo Martinez hit a bullet to 3rd which was just out of reach of Horner, scoring Garvey and setting off a wild celebration at the "Murph."

Ed Whitson drove in the Pads first run on a single scoring Garry Templeton, but gave up Atlanta runs in the 6th on an RBI single by Bob Horner and in the 8th, when Glenn Hubbard doubled home Gerald Perry with the tiebreaking run.

But the "Tub of goo" melted in the clutch, giving San Diego a 4-game losing streak-breaking win.
