4/12/84: Twins "relieved" to beat Yankees, 8-5

Editor's Note: This is post #100!

The Twins sent 10 to the plate in the top of the 5th, scoring 5, then hanging on behind relief ace Ron Davis to beat the Yankees, 8-5 at the "Stadium."

The game was tied 1-1 in the top of the 5th, when with 1 out shortstop Len Faedo slugged a solo homer off Ray Fontenot for a 2-1 Twins lead. 4 more Twin runs would score, compliments of Yankee SS Tim Foli, who had the fans yell "We want Scooter" after committing 2 errors. Tom Brunansky and Mickey Hatcher contributed RBI singles in the Foli implosion, while 2 more runs scored on Foli boo-boos. Yogi Berra, who replaced Fontenot with Bob Shirley in all the mess, would also remove Foli for PH Toby Harrah, an idea which could have come from "George."

However, though, the Yankees would score 4 in the bottom half of the 5th with Moreno, Randolph and Mattingly contributing RBI hits, cutting the lead to 6-5. That's as close as the Yanks would get, as the Twins scored twice in the 9th off Dave Righetti, with the runs scoring on a 2-run double by DH Dave Engle. Mike Smithson pitched 7-1/2 innings for the Twins, giving way to Ron Davis, who got the 5 outs he needed all on strikeouts, including Don Baylor to end the game. The win was the Twins 2nd of the season.
