4/13/84: Tigers strike for 6 in the 4th to rock BoSox, 12-6

The Tigers spoiled the BoSox home opener at Fenway with a big 6-run 4th inning to knock off their hosts, 12-6.

The Tigers had a 2-1 lead entering the 4th when they erupted for 5 straight hits off Bruce Hurst, starting with a lead-off single by Larry Herndon, his 7th hit in 2 games followed by Chet Lemon's Monster-clearing 2-run homer, his 3rd in 2 games. Marty Castillo doubled to center, Rusty Kuntz singled him home, then was driven home by Tom Brookens' RBI triple, which marked the abrupt end of Bruce Hurst's afternoon.

Mike Brown didn't fare much better, giving up back-to-back singles by Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell, but caught a break when Trammell was picked off trying to steal 2nd. Barbaro Garbey made it 8 hits in the inning with a single before Brown struck out Lance Parrish and got Herndon to bounce to short, ending the 6-run, 8-hit inning which gave the Tigers a commanding 8-1 lead after 3-1/2 innings.

The Red Sox would chip away at the lead, behind the hitting of Dwight Evans, who homered twice among his 4 hits, narrowing Milt Wilcox's lead to 8-3 after 5 and 9-5 after 6. Doug Bair allowed a run in the 7th to make the score 9-6, but the Tigers managed 3 runs in the 9th, including a solo homer by Darrell Evans for the final margin. Willie Hernandez pitched a perfect 9th to finish the Tiger win.

Editor's Note: Because of weather issues in the coming days, the next Red Sox game would not be until April 17, the Tigers, April 18.
