4/13/84: Yankees "Count" out ChiSox, 6-2
The up-and-down Yankees would be "up" again on this Friday the 13th as John "The Count" Montefusco pitched 7+ innings, limiting the White Sox to 2 runs, 8 hits in a solid 6-2 win at the "Stadium."
Montefusco was shelled in the 2nd though, as the Sox got a 1-out single from Tom Paciorek, followed by a triple by Vance Law and subsequent single double by Marc Hill, putting the ChiSox on top, 2-0.
But the Yanks took command in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings making the Sox starter slide right down the "Bannister." Toby Harrah drew a lead-off walk in the 2nd, later scoring on a fielder's choice by Tim Foli. Foli would score the 2nd Yank run when Bannister walked Lou Pinella to reload the bases, tying the score at 2.
Walks would end Floyd Bannister's night for good in the 3rd, along with a barrage of hits from the 7-8-9 hitters and starting off with Sox 2B Julio Cruz booting a Dave Winfield grounder. Toby Harrah drew his 2nd walk off Bannister, then an RBI double by Don Mattingly, RBI single by Rick Cerone and an RBI double by Foli finished Bannister off for good. Gene Nelson would settle down the Yanks from there, but Dave Winfield greeted Nelson in the bottom of the 4th with a lead-off homer. The score was 6-2 Yankees after 4.
Montefusco lasted until the 8th, when walks and a pair of errors by Tim Foli in the 7th and 8th prompted Yogi to bring in Dave Righetti, who induced Marc Hill to bounce into a Don Mattingly-started DP, ending the 8th. Roy Smalley would relieve Foli in the 9th, while "Rags" walked Julio Cruz and Rudy Law to open the 9th. Smalley fielded a Scott Fletcher FC and following a Harold Baines pop to Rick Cerone, Smalley caught Greg Luzinski's pop to secure the 6-2 Yankee win.
