4/14/84: Schmidt slugs, Carlton hurls Phils past Expos, 6-4

Mike Schmidt's solo homer with 1 out in the top of the 4th got the rally started for the Phillies on their way to a 6-4 win over the Expos at Stade Olympique.

The game was scoreless in the 4th when Schmidt took Expos starter Bill Gullickson deep, sparking what would be a 3-run 4th. Joe Lefebvre then singled and promptly scored on Glenn Wilson's RBI triple. After Von Hayes bounced out to 1st with the infield in, Bo Diaz capped the inning with an RBI double, giving the Phils a team cycle for the inning.

Montreal got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning off Steve Carlton on a lead-off single by Tim Raines who stole 2nd, took 3rd on a flyout by Andre Dawson and scored on a slow-rolling bouncer to 2nd by Gary Carter. The Phils scored 2 more in the 5th, chasing Bill Gullickson on a single by Juan Samuel, who stole 2nd and scored on a 2-base error by Andre Dawson. Glenn Wilson's RBI single scored Len Matuszek, who had reached on the Dawson error.

The Expos pulled to within 5-3 on a single by RP Greg Harris and sac fly by Pete Rose in the bottom of the 5th but fell to 3 runs back in the 7th when Von Hayes' RBI single scored Matuszek, who had led off the inning with a double. Carlton took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the 9th when Le Expos tried a last-ditch comeback on a lead-off double by Tim Wallach and a ground single by Bobby Ramos past a fading Carlton, who was then relieved by Al Holland. After a pair of pop-outs to Mike Schmidt, Holland got PH Miguel Dilone to bounce out to Matuszek to secure the Philly win.
