4/14/84: Scrap Iron walks it off for Astros, 7-6 (11)

Phil Garner's walk-off single scored Kevin Bass with the winning run in the 11th as the Astros outlasted the Reds by a 7-6 score at the Astrodome.

There were many hitting stars for the Astros in addition to Garner as Jose Cruz paced the Houston attack with 4 hits, while Craig Reynolds had a pair of RBI triples. Bass led off the 11th with a single, made it to 2nd on a single by Cruz, while Jerry Mumphrey flied to left. Enos Cabell loaded the bases with a single, setting up "Scrap Iron's" game-winning hit.

The Reds had a 6-3 lead through 7-1/2 innings, getting a home run from Gary Redus and a pair of doubles from Dave Parker. The Astros got 2 in the bottom of the 8th, then forced extras with a run in the bottom of the 9th on a leadoff walk by Bass, a double by Cruz and a RBI single by Mumphrey which scored Bass, but Eddie Milner's throw from center cut down Cruz with the potential winning run.
