4/15/84: Eisenreich, Faedo pace Twins past M's, 5-3
Jim Eisenreich and Lenny Faedo aren't exactly the 1-2 punch you would expect to carry a team but that's exactly what they did for the Twins, coming through in a big 7th inning rally as the Twins hung on to defeat the Mariners, 5-3.
The game was tied 1-all going into the bottom of the 7th with Jim Beattie and Frank Viola dueling away, but it was Beattie who would crack first with Tim Teufel starting the inning with a single. Kent Hrbek singled Teufel to 2nd, then Beattie walked Tom Brunansky to load the bases. Mickey Hatcher then lined out to short for out #1, but it would be Eisenreich who would single home the 2 go-ahead runs. Gary Gaetti then struck for out #2, but after Tim Laudner singled home an insurance run, it would be Lenny Faedo driving in his 2nd run of the game with the Twins 5th single of the inning, making it 5-1 after 7. Faedo went 3-4, while Eisenreich went 2-3.
Frank Viola pitched 7 strong innings for the Twins, allowing 3 hits, but the M's would chase him in the 8th on a 1-out single by Jack Perconte, his 3rd hit of the game and a walk by Barry Bonnell. After Al Cowens flied to right, PH Dave Henderson drew a bases-loading walk, setting it up for Steve Henderson, whose "+" single drove in Perconte and Bonnell, forcing Viola from the game for ace reliever Ron Davis, who got rookie Alvin Davis to foul out to Tim Laudner behind the plate to end the inning. Davis then retired the side in order in the 9th, getting the final 2 outs on comebackers to secure the win for Viola.
-All 12 Twins hits as well as all 5 Mariner hits were singles.
