4/15/84: Jackson 3-hits Brewers, Royals roll by 9-0 score

The Kansas City Royals are serving notice; they are a dangerous ballclub with unexpected power and solid pitching. Lefty Danny Jackson limited the shellshocked Milwaukee Brewers to 3 hits, while the Royals saw 4 home runs leave the "Fountain" in a brutal 9-0 beatdown.

The Royals flexed their hitting muscles in the bottom of the 2nd, with breakout star Steve Balboni smacking a 1-out double. Don Slaught then began the mass exodus of home run balls with a 2-run shot off Mike Caldwell. Greg Pryor followed that up with a massive shot of his own, making the score 3-0. If the ball wasn't leaving the yard, chances are it probably ended up under a Brewer fielder's glove, as Pat Sheridan got one between the legs of Cecil Cooper at 1st for a 2-base boo-boo. Onix Concepion singled home Sheridan, making it 4-0 after 2.

2 more Royal runs would chase Caldwell in the 5th with Frank White hitting a lead-off double and scoring on a Steve Balboni single with 2 outs. Don Slaught singled Balboni to 3rd, then Greg Pryor brought in Balboni, making it 6-0 after 5.

Danny Jackson breezed right along with 5-2/3 hitless innings until Robin Yount broke up the no-hit bid with a 2-out triple. The Royals then greeted Chuck Porter in the 6th with an Onix Concepion lead-off single and subsequent 2-run bomb by Darryl Motley. Porter recovered to get Frank White and Hal McRae, but Butch Davis destroyed a Porter pitch for the 4th Royal homer of the game and a 9-0 lead after 6.

Danny Jackson allowed a lead-off single in the 8th by Bill Schroder and a 2-out single by Cecil Cooper in the 9th for a 3-hit shutout. He struck out 5, walked 2 and induced 2 DPs. The Royals lead the AL West with a 7-3 record. The Brewers dropped to 5-5.
