4/15/84: That DAM Garcia!
There's a word for Toronto's speedy lead-off man: DAM. Damaso Garcia was up to his sneaky tricks on the basepaths, stealing 2 bases, including 3rd base, not to mention a pair of doubles, including one that broke the back of the Texas Rangers, as they fall to the DAM Blue Jays, 5-2.
Garcia started his havoc with a lead-off walk in the 1st, then stole 2nd, walking home on Dave Collins' RBI double. In the 3rd, Garcia sped all the way to 2nd on a double, stole 3rd and scored on Collins' SF to left. Garcia wasn't done as George Bell singled to open the 7th, advanced to 3rd on a double by Rance Mulliniks, both scoring on a 2-run double by that DAM guy. Ernie Whitt managed a run without the assistance of Garcia in the 4th on a long solo belt.
Texas tried, but couldn't catch up with the speedy Jays, even though Gary Ward managed 2 singles and a double and Buddy Bell (RBI double in 1st) and Larry Parrish (RBI single in 5th) managed to keep it respectable.
Luis Leal went the distance, scattering 11 hits while striking out 4, outdueling Ranger starter Dave Stewart who went 7 and was happy not to deal with that DAM Garcia after the 7th. Dave Tobik pitched 2 perfect innings of relief for the Rangers, who dropped to 3-7. Toronto is now 7-3 heading into a home-opening showdown with the world champion Birdmen of Baltimore.
