4/16/84: A's outlast M's, 8-5

The Oakland A's launched 4 homers at the Kingdome but had to withstand a 17-hit attack from the Mariners to hang on for an 8-5 win on Monday night.

The A's trailed the Mariners 4-1 after 3 with Barry Bonnell and Al Cowens supplying the home runs for the home team. After Davey Lopes homered in the 1st for Oakland's early run, they then strung together a run in the 2nd on a leadoff homer by Joe Morgan, then 2 more in the 5th to tie the on doubles by Dwayne Murphy and Mike Heath and a single by Donnie Hill.

The A's took the lead for good on a Carney Lansford homer in the 6th and added 2 more on their 4th homer of the night in the 7th, a 2-run shot by Murphy. Bob Kearney doubled home a run to bring the M's closer at 7-5 in the bottom of the 7th, but a lead-off walk by Davey Lopes and advance to 2nd on a Carney Lansford fly set up an 8th inning insurance run single by Dave Kingman, making the score 8-5. The M's loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th, but Bill Caudill got Barry Bonnell looking to secure the 8-5 win.

WHAT A WASTE: The Mariners wasted multi-hit nights by Phil Bradley with 4 hits and Jack Perconte and Bob Kearney with 3 hits each.

WHERE WAS RICKEY? Henderson singled, tripled and doubled, but did not score any runs and was also caught stealing.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: In the actual game, Dave Kingman had 3 home runs. He struck out 3 times but had an RBI single. Joe Morgan homered in the actual game and in the replay.
