4/17/84: Brewers stun Sox, Seaver with 3-run pinch bomb in 9th, 6-5

Bill Schroder's pinch-hit 3-run bomb (1-9 on his card) in the 9th off Ron Reed made a tough-luck loser out of Tom Seaver and a home opening winner out of the Milwaukee Brewers in a 6-5 classic at County Stadium.

Jim Gantner started the game-winning rally with a lead-off single to center off of Seaver, then Jim Sundberg rifled one to left field putting 2 on and Tony LaRussa making the call to the bullpen for Ron Reed. Reed answered the call, but Schroder responded with a monster drive to left that sent the County Stadium crowd into mass hysterics and the Sox fans who made the trip unhappy on the long drive home.

Seaver pitched 8+ innings, striking out 2 and walking 4 while Marc Hill and Greg Luzinski supplied Seaver with a pair of 2-run homers for the 5-3 lead. Julio Cruz came through with an RBI double to give the Sox that 5-3 cushion, leaving Brewer starter Moose Haas on the hook for the loss.

Maybe the most unhappy Sox camper on this day was Ron Kittle, who in 2 separate at-bats was denied home runs on the ballpark rolls, 11 in the 2nd and 13 in the 6th and to make matters even worse, was in left in the home 5th when Randy Ready rifled a Seaver pitch past 5-fielding Kittle in left with Rick Manning on base; Ready's D-20 was a 1, a triple way past Kittle's head, scoring Manning. Ready promptly scored on Robin Yount's sac fly to center, giving the Brew Crew a 3-2 lead after 5.

Tom Tellman, who relieved Haas in the 8th, ended up with the relief win, while Seaver took the painful "L" and Ron Reed, the even more painful "BS."

-Cecil Cooper: 2 doubles and an RBI single.
