4/8/14: Braves bobble, Padres pull it out, 4-2

The Atlanta Braves bobbled their way out of a possible victory, as the Padres took advantage of 6 errors to post a come-from-behind 4-2 win at the "Murph."

The Braves got their runs in the 1st and 4th innings thanks to Dale Murphy, who tripled with 2 outs in the 1st and scored on Bob Watson's RBI single. With 2 outs in the Atlanta 4th, Rafael Ramirez singled and scored on Murphy's 2nd 3-bagger of the game. Braves starter Rick Mahler was cruising right along, limiting the Padres to 1 hit through 5 innings. Then, the dam burst.

Alan Wiggins led off the Padre 6th with a single, stole 2nd, then took 3rd on the 1st of 2 throwing errors by Bruce Benedict. Another error would score Wiggins, that came when Tony Gwynn's routine grounder to Rafael Ramirez was butchered. But the comedy of errors continued in Graig Nettles' at-bat when Gwynn stole 2nd and scooted to 3rd on "Benedict Arnold's" 2nd overthrow of the inning. The run would go unscored when after Nettles walked, Mahler struck out Garvey, Kennedy and Martinez.

The Padre 7th started with a pair of bouncers to Glenn Hubbard which were actually clean, Mark Thurmond's bouncer to Mahler was not as it was the 6th Braves error, Mahler's 2nd. Alan Wiggins then walked, Tony Gwynn singled to center, loading the bases, then Nettles, who had 2 homers the previous night, would break the Braves' back again with a 2-run single, scoring Thurmond and Wiggins.

The Pads got insurance in the 8th when Terry Kennedy led off with a single and scored 2 outs later on a 3-bagger by Garry Templeton. Mark Thurmond put the Braves out of their misery by retiring the last 12 to preserve the win, the Padres 3rd straight against the struggling ball club from Atlanta.
