4/18/84: Mets come from behind to beat Expos on Hernandez's walk-off hit, 4-3

Montreal jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 3-1/2 innings, but could only muster 2 hits in the final 5 innings as the Mets on an RBI single by Darryl Strawberry in the 8th and a walk-off 2-run single by Keith Hernandez, stunned the faltering Expos by a 4-3 final score at "The House that Casey Bulit."

Le Expos struck 1st in the 2nd on a lead-off single by Gary Carter, who then scored on a 1-out triple by Terry Francona. Francona scored on an RBI single by Angel Salazar, making the score 2-0 after 1-1/2. Carter led off the Expos 4th with a home run, making the score 3-0, giving Charlie Lea a nice cushion as he breezed through the Mets order through 4 innings, allowing just one hit.

The breeze blew the Mets way starting in the 5th as after a lead-off double by Pete Rose, the Expos bats suddenly went cold with the next 12 hitters putting it in the ground/air usually ending up in an orange/black/white jersey. Those multi-colored unis started hitting in the 5th with Darryl Strawberry rapping a 1-out single, advancing to 2nd on a Mookie Wilson bouncer to 2nd. Hubie Brooks scored "Straw" with the first Met run and the comeback begun taking shape.

After Mookie singled with 1 out and was caught stealing in the 7th, Hubie Brooks doubled and Ron Hodges drew a walk, Pinch-hitter Rusty Staub bounced to 2nd, ending that threat. Wally Backman led off the 8th with a single, then advanced to 2nd on a walk by Jose Oquendo. Keith Hernandez forced out to short, moving Backman to 3rd, then George Foster lined to 3rd for out #2. Jeff Reardon relieved Lea and gave up an RBI single to Darryl Strawberry, cutting the lead to 3-2 entering the 9th inning.

Gary Carter led off the Expos 9th with a double, ending the 4-inning hitless drought but the Expos went 1-2-3 again. Hubie Brooks led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, advancing to 2nd on a line single by Ron Hodges. Pinch-hitter Danny Heep popped to 2nd then Wally Backman flied to left. Jeff Reardon needed 1 more out, but Jose Oquendo's bouncer to SS Chris Speier just skipped past to load the bases, setting up Keith Hernandez's 2-out heroics with a 2** single scoring Brooks and Hodges and capping a Met comeback/Expo collapse. Jesse Orosco got the win in relief of Walt Terrell with Jeff Reardon taking the gut-wrenching loss.
