4/19/84: Rice WALKS it off, BoSox nip Rangers 8-7 on monster day by Armas

Jim Rice drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th, capping off a game where Tony Armas slugged 2 solo home runs and tripled to bring home 2 more in a wild 8-7 win over the Rangers at Fenway Park.

After the Rangers scored twice in the 9th to tie the score at 7, Glenn Hoffman struck out to open the inning. Then Jerry Remy got his 4th single of the game to begin the game-winning rally. After being caught stealing twice, Remy got a quick jump off Odell Jones and swiped the bag. Then Jones completely forgot there was a strike zone, walking Dwight Evans and Wade Boggs to load the bases. Dave Schmidt took over for Jones to face Jim Rice and yes, you guessed it, Schmidt couldn't find it, either.

Before the Red Sox walked, Tony Armas slugged a couple of solo homers in the 2nd and 4th. Armas' 2nd homer tied the score at 3. It remained tied at 3 until the 7th when after a walk to Buddy Bell, Larry Parrish cranked a 2-run homer off Oil Can Boyd for a 5-3 Rangers lead. Parrish would drive in a 3rd Texas run later in the game on a fielder's choice with 2 outs, tying the game at 7. But before the Rangers could tie and forget there was a strike zone, Armas struck again.

Remy led off the 8th with his 3rd hit of the game, Evans who had earlier homered, drew his 2nd walk. Charlie Hough who was on thin ice at that point, faced Wade Boggs and doubled to center scoring Remy with Evans stopping at 3rd. In came Odell Jones to face Jim Rice with the infield in and no outs and Rice bounced to 3rd, runners holding. Mike Easler then whiffed, setting up Armas with an open base. The Rangers were thinking strikeout, Armas had other plans for that center field real estate and tripled home both Evans and Boggs making it 6-5. Rich Gedman then doubled home Armas for insurance, but before you can say, "Bob Stanley pitched a 1-2-3 9th for the save," the Rangers tied it up with 2 in the top of the 9th.

But we can say, "Bob Stanley got the win in relief" because... Rice WALKED it off.
