4/21/84: What's the "Mata?" Latest Yankee pickup, Griffey's 4 hits pace Yankees in 4-3 thriller

What was the matter with the Yankees against the Rangers? Don Mattingly's 2 hits and nothing else. Now, what was the "Mata" in the rematch? Victor Mata, that's what, as he had an RBI double and sac fly, while old hand Ken Griffey went 4-4 as the Yankees hung on for a 4-3 win in the Bronx.

Mattingly did get 2 doubles to add to his increasing resume, while Yank starter Ray Fontenot cruised to a 4-0 lead through 5 until the Rangers rallied for 3 in the 6th on George Wright's bomb to left. A 1st and 3rd Ranger rally forced Yogi Berra to bring on Jose Rijo with 1 out in the 7th, getting Wayne Tolleson on a pop to Rick Cerone and PH Bob Jones to strike out swinging. After Billy Sample lined to Andre Robertson at short to open the 8th, Yogi went for his ace Dave Righetti, who got the last 5 outs, including getting PH Dave Hostetler looking for out #27.
