4/21/84: Expos earn split with Cards, take G2, 5-2

While lacking the pomp and drama of game 1, game 2 was a game of redemption for the Expos , who bounced back from the bittersweet G1 loss for a 5-2 win over the Cards , securing a doubleheader split.  Pete Rose sat out game 2, still basking in the glory of 4000 and certainly cheering on Tim Wallach , who had the big hits in the nightcap, slugging a 2-run homer in the 3rd to give Le Expos a lead they would not relinquish. Wallach added 2 more in the 7th with a bases-loaded single for the final 5-2 score. David Palmer scattered 6 hits for the complete game win while Bob Forsch took the loss. OVERRIDING HISTORY: In the actual game which was rain-shortened, Palmer pitched a 5-inning no-hitter . MON 5-12-0 STL 2-6-0 WP-Palmer LP-Forsch HR-Wallach MON 6-9 STL 7-8

4/21/84: He got #4000, but...

It took 2 weeks later to get it in the C&D, but Pete Rose did join Ty Cobb as an exclusive member of the 4000 Club . He made it in the top of the 3rd off Card starter John Stuper, joining the "Georgia Peach" in baseball immortality. The milestone came in game 1 of a makeup doubleheader at Busch Stadium and you'd think Pete would be ecstatic about it in the postgame interview. Turns out though, it was very bittersweet. Bottom of the 8th, Expos lead 2-1 on a 2-run homer by Terry Francona in the 4th, Steve Rogers on the mound and Lonnie Smith leading off. Smith laced a pitch to left field, Rose, who has caught a billion of these things, somehow was thinking about the postgame celebration and... Dropped. The. Ball. E-7. 2. Base. Error. After Ken Oberkfell grounded to 2nd, Tom Herr lined a single to center that scored Smith with the tying run. Herr then stole 2nd, Steve Rogers gave way to Gary Lucas, who got George Hendrick on a popout to Gary Carter. PH David Green th...

4/21/84: The Price is right as Reds overwhelm puny Giants, 7-0

The Reds came on down and made the Giants overbid many times against Joe Price , limiting the pathetic, puny Giants to just 4 hits in a 7-0 whitewash on Contestants Row er, Candlestick Park . The Reds supported Price with a 14-hit attack paced by 3 hits each from Dan Driessen and Brad Gulden , chasing Bill Laskey , who pitched 3.2 innings. The Giant defense was a giant mess, committing 2 errors, plus a wild pitch from reliever Frank Williams . The game was so dispiriting, there were a few chants of "Fire Frank" as well as a rousing rendition of the 49ers fight song at the 7th inning stretch.  CIN 7-14-1 SFG 0-4-2 WP-Price LP-Laskey CIN 6-9 SFG 6-8   -"Fire Frank" as in Robinson .

4/21/84: Corcoran's PH single gives Phils 3-2 win over Mets

Tim Corcoran 's PH single and shutdown relief by Tug McGraw and Al Holland rallied the Phillies to a 3-2 nailbiter over the Mets in front of a thrilled crowd at " The Vet ." With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th and 2 outs, Von Hayes singled and advanced to 3rd on a single by Bo Diaz . Tim Corcoran then grabbed a bat for Ivan DeJesus and laced a Brent Gaff pitch up the middle for the eventual winning run. The Phillie bullpen shutdown the Mets with 1-2-3 relief by Tug McGraw in the 8th and for the save, a 1-2-3 inning by Al Holland in the 9th.  PHI 3-11-0 NYM 2-6-2 WP-McGraw LP-Gaff SV-Holland PHI 10-4 NYM 9-6

4/21/84: What's the "Mata?" Latest Yankee pickup, Griffey's 4 hits pace Yankees in 4-3 thriller

What was the matter with the Yankees against the Rangers? Don Mattingly 's 2 hits and nothing else. Now, what was the "Mata" in the rematch? Victor Mata , that's what, as he had an RBI double and sac fly, while old hand Ken Griffey went 4-4 as the Yankees hung on for a 4-3 win in the Bronx .  Mattingly did get 2 doubles to add to his increasing resume, while Yank starter Ray Fontenot cruised to a 4-0 lead through 5 until the Rangers rallied for 3 in the 6th on George Wright 's bomb to left. A 1st and 3rd Ranger rally forced Yogi Berra to bring on Jose Rijo with 1 out in the 7th, getting Wayne Tolleson on a pop to Rick Cerone and PH Bob Jones to strike out swinging. After Billy Sample lined to Andre Robertson at short to open the 8th, Yogi went for his ace Dave Righetti , who got the last 5 outs, including getting PH Dave Hostetler looking for out #27.  NYY 7-6 TEX 5-10 WP-Fontenot LP-Tanana SV-Righetti HR-Wright NYY 4-9-0 TEX 3-6-1

4/21/84: Mariners lay a really rotten egg against Brewers, 15-1

No game summary, just the box score, who homered, etc. Just pretty certain Del Crandall locked the doors in the Mariner dressing room after the game.  MIL 15-15-0 SEA 1-7-0 WP-Caldwell (CG) LP-Young HR-Manning (2, 5 RBI in 7th and 8th) Schroder MIL 8-7 SEA 5-10 - Brewers 7 runs in 5th, 3 in 7th, 5 in 8th. 4/21/84: Brock's 2 HR/6 RBI not enough as Padres outlast Dodgers, 13-10

Those who left Dodger Stadium when the score was 10-0 after 4 innings can be forgiven. Greg Brock certainly gave them enough reason to turn their cars back around with a pair of 3-run homers in the 7th and 9th but amazingly, it wasn't enough. Padres 13, Dodgers 10. It all began in the 1st when San Diego sent 10 friars to the plate and roughed up Jerry Reuss for 6 runs, starting with a trio of stolen bases by Luis Salazar , Alan Wiggins and Tony Gwynn .  Steve Garvey doubled home Wiggins and Gwynn, while Garry Templeton also doubled home 2 runs in the 1nning. In a touch of irony, Reuss managed to strike out the side, but by the 2nd, he was gone and after 3, so was the game. Padres 10, Dodgers 0 after 3.  Mark Thurmond still had a 10-2 lead entering the bottom of the 7th, when Greg Brock decided to make things a bit interesting. Bill Russell and Ken Landreaux rapped back-to-back singles with 1 out, then after a near-homer by Pedro Guerrero , PH Dave Anderson singled h...
